These spaces were all built by Holland Landscapes, and for anyone new to My Garden Design, I am Paul Baker, I'm the proud owner of Holland Landscapes, an active member of the Association of Professional Landscapers, and founder of My Garden Design.

I wrote this blog almost three years ago and somehow, it seems even more relevant now than it did then.

Profit margins - it's what we're all in business for - not necessarily to get filthy rich, but to be able to hire the best staff, keep machinery in good nick and just feel proud of what we've achieved.

Apparently there's even more rain on the way this week, so why not have a read of this blog and see if there are any ways that you could tweak your work habits in order improve your profit margin.

My top two recommendations would be to outsource garden design (to free up some mental bandwidth as well as some time). What do YOU think are the most common garden design mistakes?

We asked this question of some well known industry faces who came up with several basic mistakes that can really disrupt a garden build . These are just a few examples..

😠 Not fully understanding landscaping techniques before specifying groundworks and/or materials. These things matter a lot when designing to a budget.

😠 Planting in isolation from the overall design. Layout and planting needs to be cohesive in order to produce the 'wow' factor.

😠 Not taking haunching into consideration when specifying plants for small beds or near driveways.

Here's an example of our work.

The garden's owner tasked GW Landscapes with creating an inviting outdoor space with room for al-fresco dining, extra living space and the inevitable rotary washing line, all within the confines of a moderately sized garden.

Our garden designers came up with a plan that features a strong, but imaginative, layout. There's a feeling of space and light but at the same time, the garden is secluded and intimate.

From a landscaper's point of view, it's an exciting project. But take another look at the design. Obviously we've blanked out the client's address, but can you see that there's no mention of My Garden Design - all of the branding and contact details are for the landscaper who commissioned the design. It all looks very professional.

Whether we're creating a planting plan or a layout plan for your landscaping project, one thing will always be consistent.....OK two things will always be consistent

1. The quality. EVERY SINGLE DESIGN is double-checked by an experienced landscaper just to ensure that it's practical and buildable. To be honest - we've never had to ask the designer for any alterations (we pick our designers very carefully). But for your peace of mind, we always review orders before sending them out.

2. You'll not find our contact details anywhere on the design. One of our USP's is that the company who comissioned the design has their logo showing loud and proud for the householder to see.
