There is no better feeling than seeing your work stand the test of time.

Back in March 2010, I custom-built and installed this front door and frame (swipe to see the unpainted original photo!). Today, in 2026, the customer called me back to upgrade the locks and handles.

16 years of sun, rain, and daily use, and the wood is still straight and the frame is as solid as day one.

Location: Lower Clapton, Hackney (E5)

Client Brief: Relocate an existing timber shed and construct a bespoke, high-quality pergola.

📋 The Customer Challenge
The client reached out with a common London garden dilemma: an existing timber shed taking up prime space and a desire for a new, structural seating area (Pergola).

The Goal:

Dismantle & Save: Carefully relocate the current shed to a new position without compromising the timber panels.

Structural Upgrade: Ensure the relocated shed has a rot-proof foundation.

Artisan Build: Construct a "simple but high-quality" pergola that complements the garden’s new layout.

🏗️ Phase 1: Structural Shed Recovery & Relocation
Relocating an aged shed is a surgical process. We don't just "move" it; we restore it.

The Labor (1.5 - 2 Days - £650)
Precision Deconstruction: Stripping the old mineral felt and manually extracting fixings to prevent the tongue-and-groove panels from splitting or warping.

The Foundation (Sub-Frame): Most sheds in E5 fail due to ground damp. We build a UC3 pressure-treated timber sub-frame (50mm x 100mm) set on adjustable risers. This creates essential airflow to prevent future floor rot.

Re-assembly: Squaring the frame to 1mm tolerances so the doors and windows function perfectly in the new location.

The Materials (£280)
Roofing: 38kg Heavy-duty green mineral glass-fiber felt (tear-resistant).

Fixings: 4.5mm x 50mm exterior-grade structural screws and galvanized clout nails.

Preservative: End-grain sealer applied to all new cuts to block moisture ingress.

🪵 Phase 2: The Custom Artisan Pergola
A bespoke 2.4m x 2.4m structure designed for structural longevity and aesthetic appeal.

The Labor (2 Days - £750)
Excavation: Digging 4x structural footings to a 600mm depth to reach stable sub-soil (essential in Hackney clay).

Joinery: Hand-cutting half-lap notches into the main rafters. This interlocking design provides 4x more lateral strength than simple "bolted-on" beams.

Setting: Posts are laser-leveled and set in high-yield Postcrete with a rain-shedding taper at ground level.

The Materials (£520)
Timber: Premium Sawn, Pressure-Treated Softwood (100mm x 100mm posts / 47mm x 150mm rafters).

Hardware: M12 x 160mm Galvanized Coach Bolts with oversized washers for maximum structural clamping.

Foundations: 8-10 bags of rapid-set structural Postcrete.

🚛 Phase 3: Logistics & Site Management
We handle the "Hackney Factor" so the project remains stress-free for the client.

The Logistics (£350 - £400)
Waste Management: Removal of old roofing felt, rotted floor joists, and existing garden debris (pallets/old bins). We coordinate a Wait & Load van or 6-yard skip.

Council Permits: Management of Hackney CPZ Tradesman Permits (Zone E/U) and daily parking dispensations.

Site Protection: All transit through the property is done with heavy-duty floor protection and a full site sweep-down daily.
