Ever wonder why some rooms just feel "right" while others feel chaotic? It’s not magic—it’s math! (The fun kind, we promise).

The 60-30-10 rule is the timeless interior design formula for creating a cohesive colour palette in any space. Here is how to break it down:

🎨 The Breakdown

60% Primary Colour (The Foundation): Usually your neutral. This goes on the walls, large area rugs, and maybe your largest sofa. It anchors the space and gives the eye a place to rest.

30% Secondary Colour (The Character): Use this for accent chairs, curtains, bed linens, or even an accent wall. It supports the main colour but has enough personality to stand out.

10% Accent Color (The Spark): This is where you have fun! Think throw pillows, artwork, decorative vases, or lamps. It adds that "pop" and pulls the whole look together.

💡 Why It Works

It creates a sense of visual balance and prevents your space from looking too monochromatic (boring) or too cluttered (overwhelming).

Pro Tip: Don't be afraid to play with different
shades and textures within these percentages to add even more depth!

When designing the interior of a home, it is essential to use the elements and principles to create a balanced environment. There are also also rules we must follow and the 70, 30 is one of them.

This rule is foundational and expects us to divide the space into two distinct portions, 70% of one style and 30% of a contrasting or complementary one. This prevents a room from being monotonous, too much of the same or looking chaotic.

As this rule is flexible it can be applied to different aspects not just style. For instance, colour schemes, (using 70% primary colour neutral colours and 30% bolder accent), texture and materials (70% smooth uniform materials mixed with 30% rough textures like wood, grain velvet etc).

This rule is a popular stand-alone guide and is seen as a variation of other design principles, which I will discuss at a later stage.

Whether you like bold, busy interiors or you like clean, uncluttered and minimalist styles, colour can be used as a powerful tool to set a mood and define spaces in our home.

Personally I fall in the second category and love subtle styles with a pop of colour. This could be a sofa a cushion, a throw or an accent wall. I feel this type of balance is cool and calming at the same time. Practically, these accessories can be changed periodically without too much expense, whereas repainting a wall to change its colour or changing wallpaper can be very costly.

However, I understand that we work with different clients with varying tastes in design and will always seek to respect their wishes.

Different colours can evoke different emotions, for e.g. warm colours like yellow and orange can make a space look cosy, while cool colours like blue and green can be calming and bright colours can be seen as energetic.

So these can be taken into consideration when thinking of what colours to use in which space, there is definitely a psychology to it, so use it wisely!

When staging your home for sale or resale, please remember that the garden needs to be given some consideration as well. Even more so as it is the first thing to be seen before entering the property.

People will usually make their first judgements from the state of the garden. A well manicured one gives the desire to see the rest of the house, and on the other hand a dirty, unkempt one will immediately create a bad impression.

This is called kerb appeal in the UK or curb appeal in the US.

Make sure you tend to your gardens. Remove any rubbish, overgrown is definitely a no no. It's a no brainer reallly! it does not have to be perfect just clean and tidy. Use it as welcome mat for potential buyers.

Let's talk home staging.....

It's a marketing tool that in my opinion is a tad underused and I am on a mission to change this!

It is not just throwing pieces of furniture and accessories together in a home as some may think, instead the spaces are cleverly and professionally designed to attract the right buyers.

Presentation is everything and we make sure it shows potential buyers the functionality of the home and make it one less thing for them to worry about.

It has also been proven that a furnished home sells quicker than an empty one, attracts competitive offers, which usually means up to 10% more higher sale price and a good ROI. This is usually the one issue that homeowners or estate agents don't understand.

There is always a mention of the cost involved, which I assure them is a good investment. Think about the loss of income when a property stays on the market longer than 3 months. There is a psychology to it and we are here to make sure all questions are answered and no stone left unturned.

Lighting is very important in a home as it helps us to see what we are doing, and there are 4 different approaches to create this effectively. Ambient (general) task (functional) accent (highlighting) and decorative.

This can be a combination of ceiling fixtures, table and floor lamps, wall sconces with dimmers for control.
This creates an ambiance, functionality and can also enhance features within the home. Much better than one single form of lighting.

Varied light sources at different heights creates a balanced, inviting illumination and displays comfort and design. Not forgetting to consider room sizes.

When planning a space in a home, there is a process to strategically organise and analyse the rooms to achieve functional, ease of flow, and aesthetics.

This is achieved by creating a layout that serves its purpose, making sure each space is defined, and positioning furniture and other elements in a way that uses up the space effectively.

Think about how you and your household will use the space, not forgetting future needs, like a new baby.

Next, create a floor plan and add furniture. It's OK to experiment with different types.

Finally, look over the plan. Feel free to add or remove things as you see fit to ensure it all actually works for you. Rinse and repeat until you are fully satisfied.

Creating beautiful interiors is one aspect a designer relishes in as it brings out the best features of any room and shows it off exactly for what they are.

Using different styles is also a way to help a client express themselves in the best way possible.

The Japandi, (featured) which is a combination of elegant Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian functionality style, is a mix of natural materials, neutral colours, and clean lines.

Spending time in nature and bringing the outside in resonates in the use of wood and greenery, and is a testament to the love of outdoors by both the Japanese and Scandinavian cultures. This looks effortless, cosy, and timeless and can allow for a very casual experience.

When designing a kitchen space, there are a few key things to take into consideration:

You may or may not have heard of the kitchen triangle, which is an easy layout that creates an ease and safety of workload between the kitchen sink, cooking unit, hobs and fridge.

Regardless of your preferred layout, you should start with the sink and place the cooking units and fridge in close proximity. This ensures safety and efficiency as one runs around to prepare a meal.

Also, make sure there's ample work surfaces allowing space for food preparation.

Storage - this should be placed close to where they are being used. E.g, pots and pans in drawers and cabinets close to the cooking units for easy reach.

Appliances should be thought about in the early stages to make sure they fit in the spaces available.

These are only key points to note in the planning stages and a lot of it depends on the size of the space available and personal preferences.

It's the end of summer and getting a bit colder, although there's the odd day here and there where you leave the house all wrapped up but roasting an hour later because the weather decides to get really warm.

Autumn months means cosy and snug moments indoors, and restyling your home to create this mood can be very therapeutic. Think candles and soft lighting dotted around with cushions and throws to complete the look.

You can even bring the outside in with autumnal trees in the living room, not forgetting the smell of cinnamon tea, an aroma that appeals to the senses!

What are you doing to welcome the new season in your home?
