As winter approaches, dropping temperatures will cause freezing water to burst pipes, causing you to drink, cook, and wash without water.
Be ready, be prepared
With this in mind, it is now time to take action to ready your home for the cold weather and to prevent costly disturbances.
Particularly if it occurs at night or on the weekend, a burst pipe can be incredibly frustrating, making it more difficult to track down an emergency plumber to help repair it.
Here are some ways to prevent frozen pipes:
-Wrap up pipes on the exterior of the house, like those in basements, attics, garages, kitchen cabinets, and on. Using heat tape or foam rubber insulation that is UL-listed when pipes are exposed to cold moving air. Wrap the lagging water tanks as well.
-Open the loft door and let the heated air pass if your water tank is in the loft.
-Fix dripping outside taps, because in the pipe where it falls, even a slight trickle will freeze, and risk stopping it.
-Put the heat on at regular intervals and consider lowering the thermostat overnight to about 12 degrees C. If a pipe freezes, the cost of extra heating would be more than washed out. - Be sure you remember where the stopcock is, because, in an emergency, you can turn it off. If you are confused, the first search under the kitchen sink, and if you still can't see it, ask a neighbor or get a plumber's advice.
Always remember, it is better to be prepared.
