Blackheath, south east London.

An infill site where planning required a house of architectural merit. The answer was a modernist build in glass and Cotswold stone, reached via a country style lane in the middle of south east London.

A double height void at the centre of the plan brings light deep into the house, with glass balustrades to the two bedroom wings above.

This ugly 90s duckling needed a new coat. We considered stone and brick slips, but neither were reasonable on a cost basis, so the clients rightly went for render, which is softened nicely by being able to keep the original roof.

Bonny Barn, Roseland Peninsula, Cornwall.

The first floor bedroom lets the original volumes speak for themselves. The ceiling follows the roof pitch, reaching 5 m (16 ft) at the apex, supported by the exposed oak A-frame. The depth of the 19th century stone wall is visible in the window reveal.

Bonny Barn has 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a 60 ft (18 m) garden accessed from both ground and first floor, a separate vaulted garage and space for three further cars. It is available through Lillicrap Chilcott.

A full build management project, from finding the house to completion.

The principal suite was enlarged and rearranged to include a dressing room, gym and ensuite. Replanning the first floor meant the house still has five further double bedrooms.

This house never had a size issue, but it did have a flow and adjacency problem. There were four separate rooms at the heart of the house, which we opened into one, zoned as kitchen, dining, snug and pantry.
