Columbia Road has a rich and fascinating history ๐ฟ
Named after philanthropist Angela Burdett Coutts, the area was originally shaped by Victorian development in the 1860s to serve the nearby Jesus Hospital Estate. It later became known for its wood trade, upholstery workshops, and thriving local industry.
The famous Columbia Road Flower Market began as a Saturday trading market before shifting to Sundays as the local community grew. Flowers were traditionally brought in by handcart from nearby nurseries, with traders securing pitches on the sound of a whistle.
After facing decline in the 1970s, local residents helped save the area from redevelopment. Since the 1980s, it has grown into a vibrant, internationally recognised destination.
Today, Columbia Road is home to its iconic flower market, independent shops, and cafes, making it one of Londonโs most unique and loved streets ๐ธ
If youโre in or around Hackney, this oneโs a must-visit ๐
