Single Homeless Project

Single Homeless Project Working to prevent homelessness and help Londoners to transform their lives. Single Homeless Project is a London-wide charity.

Our vision is of a society where everyone has a place to call home and the chance to live a fulfilling life. We help single Londoners by preventing homelessness, providing support and accommodation, promoting wellbeing, enhancing opportunity, and being a voice for change. From supporting people in crisis to helping people take the final steps towards independence and employment, we make a difference to 10,000 lives every year across all 32 boroughs. Our Values

Clients hold the key - as an organisation founded by homeless people, we believe in the fundamental right of every individual to take control of their lives. Tailoring support to their needs and aspirations, we work with people to build their capacity for self-determination, so that they can shape their own futures. Going the extra mile - we go the extra mile for the people we work with, many of whom have multiple and complex needs for which there are no quick and easy fixes. We keep working with people no matter how challenging it may be, and we donโ€™t give up on them. People, not problems - we see our clients as people, not problems. As well as offering practical support, we believe itโ€™s essential to give people the opportunity to discover a sense of purpose, to grow in confidence, express themselves and build meaningful relationships. A voice for change - we are committed to tackling the underlying causes of homelessness and social exclusion, and we will use what we learn to make the case for prevention and systemic change. We are also passionate about promoting the voices of homeless and vulnerable people, whose stories often go unheard. Supporting staff - we maintain a culture in which staff are respected, supported, and listened to. We value the contribution of all staff and we are a diverse organisation that pulls together, in a spirit of mutual trust and co-operation. We encourage creativity and new ideas, prizing innovation as a means of achieving our mission. Honest and open - we are honest and open in our dealings with clients, staff, partners, supporters and other stakeholders. We will do what we say we will do, and we will strive to communicate proactively and transparently.

This week, women are being counted across England. โœŠ

More than 115 local authorities and hundreds of organisations are taking part in the biggest Womenโ€™s Rough Sleeping Census yet.

But we donโ€™t want this to happen in some areas, once a year, without dedicated funding.

We want to nationally. Weโ€™re calling on the Government to fund and roll out the Census across England from 2027. Because โ€˜Everyone Inโ€™ needs to mean EVERYONE.

Our Assistant Director of System Change, Lucy Campbell, writes for Inside Housing about why women cannot be overlooked in the Governmentโ€™s drive to get people off the streets.

Women experiencing rough sleeping are too often missing from the data, and without the right approach, they risk being missed by the support that follows too.

For four years, women experiencing rough sleeping have been telling us where they sleep, why they stay hidden and what they need to feel safe.

Theyโ€™ve told us about staying awake through the night because theyโ€™re afraid to sleep. About moving from place to place to stay safe. About the barriers they face trying to access appropriate accommodation and support.

And theyโ€™ve told us what needs to change.

This week, as the Womenโ€™s Rough Sleeping Census takes place across more than 115 local authorities, hundreds of organisations are listening.

But listening must lead to action.

Womenโ€™s experiences need to shape how we count rough sleeping, how outreach is delivered and how accommodation and support are designed.

Women have been telling us what they need. Itโ€™s time to make sure they are seen, heard and counted - rolling out and funding the Womenโ€™s Rough Sleeping Census across England from 2027

Women experiencing rough sleeping are still too often underrepresented in official figures.

Many women stay out of sight to stay safe, spending the night on buses, in A&E waiting rooms, walking through the night or staying with strangers rather than sleeping visibly on the street.

That means traditional approaches to counting rough sleeping can miss them, and without the full picture, itโ€™s harder to make sure services and support reflect womenโ€™s needs.

Thatโ€™s why, this week, more than 115 local authorities are taking part in the Womenโ€™s Rough Sleeping Census, using a gender-informed approach to build a better understanding of womenโ€™s rough sleeping.

But participation is still voluntary, with no dedicated national funding.

We, alongside our partners Solace, Crisis and CGL and over 50 incredible organisations, are calling on the Government to fund and roll out the Census across England from 2027.

The Government has committed to offering everyone sleeping rough a route off the streets by Christmas.

To make โ€œEveryone Inโ€ mean EVERYONE, we need to make women count.

๐Ÿšจ This week marks the fifth Womenโ€™s Rough Sleeping Census.

More than 115 local authorities across England are taking part, alongside hundreds of homelessness, womenโ€™s, health and community organisations. But what exactly is the Census, and why does it matter?

Unlike traditional rough sleeping counts, the Census takes a gender-informed approach, designed to find women in places theyโ€™re more likely to be:
โžก๏ธ Transport hubs
โžก๏ธ Hospital waiting rooms
โžก๏ธ McDonaldโ€™s, alleyways and hidden corners of our cities

Women experiencing rough sleeping are more likely to stay hidden for safety, meaning they can be missed by traditional counts. And when women go uncounted, they risk going unsupported.

Led by us and , the Census helps uncover the true scale of womenโ€™s rough sleeping, so services and support can better reflect their needs. ๐Ÿค

Without data that sees women, we canโ€™t build services that truly support them. ๐Ÿ’œ

Too many women sleeping rough go unseen.

Women often hide for their safety, meaning theyโ€™re missed by traditional rough sleeping counts and the support that should reach them. ๐Ÿ˜”

Itโ€™s appalling. And weโ€™re changing it.

For five years, weโ€™ve led the Womenโ€™s Rough Sleeping Census with Solace and organisations across England, using a gender-informed approach to reveal a much clearer picture of womenโ€™s rough sleeping.

Last year, we heard from thousands of women across 101 local authorities. This week, we want to reach even more.

Five years of evidence has shown that the way we count women needs to change. Now itโ€™s time to make that change national.

No woman should go unseen. ๐Ÿ’œ

What does womenโ€™s rough sleeping look like? It isnโ€™t always someone sleeping in a doorway.

It can mean spending the night on a bus. ๐ŸšŒ
Sitting in an A&E waiting room. ๐Ÿฅ
Walking through the night. ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ
Staying with someone because the street feels even less safe.

Last year, 65% of women surveyed through the Womenโ€™s Rough Sleeping Census had slept in places not included in official rough sleeping counts, or stayed awake and walked through the night to avoid harm.

When our systems donโ€™t recognise these experiences, women get missed.

Thatโ€™s why we need the Womenโ€™s Rough Sleeping Census.

Itโ€™s time to .

โ€˜Everyone Inโ€™ needs to mean EVERYONE.

The Government has recently committed to offering everyone sleeping rough a route off the streets by Christmas.

But women experiencing rough sleeping are too often hidden from official figures. They may spend the night on buses, in A&E waiting rooms, walking the streets to stay safe, or staying with strangers rather than sleeping visibly.

Today, the biggest Womenโ€™s Rough Sleeping Census yet begins โ€“ with more than 115 councils and hundreds of organisations taking part across England.
