Dear Auntie Thandi,
At 52, I realized I had been working hard but building nothing. I know that sounds harsh, but it was the painful truth.

For 30 years, I woke early, worked overtime, covered shifts, helped family, paid bills, attended events, and helped anyone who needed money.

People thought I was doing well, and I thought so too.

But one evening, I asked myself:
"If I stop working tomorrow, what have I built?"

The answer shocked me: no savings, investments, business, rental, pension, or emergency fund—nothing.

Despite earning a lot, most of it passed through my hands. My furniture was aging, my car was less valuable, clothes out of fashion. The money and years were gone.

Suddenly, retirement seemed frightening. I cried, not from poverty, but from realizing I confused earning with building wealth. I focused on surviving, not creating assets. Nobody taught me the difference.

I copied my parents' hard work—work, pay bills, repeat. Now I see working hard is important, but not enough. You need assets that grow when you're sleeping—pension, investments, property, skills.

Today, I’m changing: I save before I spend, invest before upgrading, say no more, and stop trying to impress those not paying my bills. The process is slow, but I finally feel hopeful.

I might not be a millionaire, but I refuse to reach 65 with only memories of hard work.
