healycornelius design consultancy limited are pleased to share that planning permission has been secured for a unique mixed-use 'village-style' development on the southern gateway to Killarney, Co. Kerry.

The development consists of change of use of an existing detached residential dwelling to hostel reception and lounge area, a 2-storey vertical extension over the existing convenience store and service station containing a 150-bed hostel and a new-build commercial building containing key retail and healthcare offerings.

The architectural form of random geometric profiles was inspired by the topography of the local mountainous landscape and its adjacency to Killarney National Park. A small, well-considered palette of materials including louvered timber and Corten cladding reflect the properties proximity to nature while acknowledging the light industrial heritage of the site.

It was a pleasure working with our clients who placed their faith in us to conceive and deliver the design and secure planning permission for this landmark development.

Are you aware of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) Recast and the changes it is driving in Ireland?

Last week, healycornelius design consultancy limited Director, Michael O'Keeffe FCIAT MCIOB MCABE, attended the SEAI Energy Show in the RDS, Dublin to learn more about the renovation technologies, supportive grants and implications of upcoming legislation to implement on our projects.

Notably for homeowners, from 24 May 2026, the familiar BER scale will shift from the current multi-tiered A1–G system to a simplified A0–G format. On the surface, this looks like a usability improvement—clearer, more accessible, easier for homeowners to interpret. But in reality, it signals something much more fundamental.

"This isn’t just a rebranding of BER—it’s a repositioning of what we value in buildings” advises Michael. “We’re moving from a system that measures energy use to one that starts to quantify total environmental impact. That’s a significant shift in design thinking.”

For those involved in design, construction, or property, this is a pivotal moment. The BER is evolving from a compliance exercise into a strategic indicator of future value, performance, and risk.

As another year comes to an end, we wish to extend our gratitude to all our clients who have placed their trust in us for their exciting projects.

Thanks also to the builders, contractors and fellow industry professionals with whom we collaborated to deliver projects of all shapes and sizes throughout the past year.

Our offices will be closed from 5:00pm on 19 December 2025 until 5 January 2026.

As we look forward to another exciting year, whether you are thinking of building, renovating or extending, and would like something bespoke and a little different, we would be delighted to hear from you.

🎉 It's always great to finish a week on a high! 🎉

In the last hour, we were delighted to advise our clients on the Planning Approval for their new-build single-storey dwelling and detached garage in Co. Kerry.

The dwelling form and layout was inspired by the traditional doubled-slipped typology and was designed with consideration of the site topography and orientation, with effective separation of private and public realms, both internally and externally.

We're pleased to have secured permission on the first attempt, on a site in proximity to a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), without Further / Additional Information requests or any onerous conditions attached to the approval.

Since 2016, our office in Killarney, Co. Kerry has facilitated students in local secondary schools on their Work Experience, giving them a sample of what working in an architectural practice is like.

This typically entails starting a project, from developing the brief and concept design to spatially coordinating on design software and preparing a presentation of their proposal. Often, there is also the opportunity to visit live project sites or shadow a member of staff at a client or design team meeting.

While we strive to give as many students as comprehensive an experience as possible, we are pleased to confirm that our placements for the 2024/2025 academic year are now full.

We are grateful for those who have recommended us over the years where we have witnessed an increase in applications.
