Perfect Pumpkin Recipe Ideas
Make use of the pumpkin after carving

Autumn in the UK wouldn't be complete without the arrival of pumpkins. These vibrant and versatile vegetables take centre stage in various recipes, from hearty soups to delightful desserts. So, grab your apron and prepare to embark on a pumpkin-filled culinary adventure!

Classic Pumpkin Soup:
Nothing says autumn like a warm bowl of pumpkin soup. This is a staple on many dinner tables. The silky-smooth texture and slightly sweet flavour make it a comforting choice. Pair it with some crusty bread for the ultimate comfort meal.

Pumpkin Pie:
While traditionally associated with American Thanksgiving, the UK has embraced this pumpkin-infused dessert. A flaky pastry crust filled with a spiced pumpkin filling is a delightful treat, especially during Halloween and Thanksgiving celebrations.

Pumpkin Risotto:
Pumpkin can add a rich, earthy flavour to your risotto. Combined with arborio rice, stock, and a touch of Parmesan cheese, it creates a creamy and satisfying dish perfect for a cozy evening at home.

Roasted Pumpkin Seeds:
Don't let those seeds go to waste! Roast them with a sprinkle of sea salt or your favourite spices. They make for a fantastic crunchy snack, and they're packed with nutrients.

Pumpkin Scones:
For a twist on the classic cream tea, try making pumpkin scones. These tender, flaky pastries incorporate pumpkin puree and spices for a seasonal twist. Enjoy them with clotted cream and your favourite jam.

Pumpkin Curry:
The UK's love for curries knows no bounds, and a pumpkin curry is a delectable way to incorporate this autumn vegetable into your dinner routine. The natural sweetness of pumpkin pairs perfectly with the spiciness of a good curry.

Pumpkin and Sage Gnocchi:
Gnocchi, those soft potato dumplings, can be made even more scrumptious by adding pumpkin and sage. It's a winning combination that's sure to please your taste buds.

Pumpkin Chutney:
Homemade chutney is a delightful way to preserve the flavours of the season. Pumpkin chutney, with its mix of sweet and savoury notes, complements cheese platters and sandwiches wonderfully.

Pumpkin and Feta Salad:
For a lighter option, consider a pumpkin and feta salad. Roasted pumpkin chunks combined with creamy feta cheese and a drizzle of balsamic dressing create a perfect harmony of flavours.

Whether you're carving pumpkins for Halloween or simply indulging in the flavours of autumn, these pumpkin recipes offer a delightful variety of dishes that can warm your heart and tantalize your taste buds. So, this season, embrace the pumpkin and get cooking!

Adding value to your home with an awning

The stunning appearance of an awning, the shaded comfort, and savings on energy costs, are just a few of the reasons why awnings can increase your home's market value

An extendable outside covering typically attached above a window or door, an awning is perhaps an underrated outside appliance which can have just as much aesthetic appeal as it can practical. In fact, due to their functionality and appearance, awnings can add value to homes, particularly large ones, adding a significant amount of curb appeal to your property.

Awnings generally cost a lot less than porches and decking, and in many cases are much more attractive than their aforementioned rivals, adding a unique kind of charm to your outside space. The average retractable awning installation can cost anywhere between £550 and £10,000, depending on the size and whether or not it’s electrically operated.

Furthermore, awnings aren’t just for summer protection from the sun, they can also protect against rain, snow and hail, and, if the awning if installed above a window, can protect your windows from any potential damage from the elements.

Here are our favourite three types of awnings:

Freestanding Awnings
With no wall-mounting needed, freestanding awnings are structural frameworks that stand freely to protect a portion of your outside space. Because they’re freestanding, their particularly sturdy construction means they can cover large spaces like restaurants, poolside areas and lawns.

Full Cassette Awnings
These awnings are retracted into a casing, neatly wrapping up the roller, fabric, and arms when not in use. When they are in use, these awnings offer the highest level of security and protection from the elements. If you don’t necessarily prioritize protection as much as others do, you could consider a semi cassette awning which will reduce costs.

Motorised Awnings
A popular choice these days among homeowners, electric awnings require minimal effort to operate and use, as they are connected to your electricity supply and operated via a switch or remote control.

Beat the Winter Blues
The Benefits of Exercising at the Gym to Ward Off Seasonal Affective Disorder

As winter approaches and the days grow shorter, many of us experience a dip in our mood and energy levels. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), often referred to as the "winter blues," is a form of depression that tends to strike during the colder months. While it can be a challenging condition, the good news is that there are effective ways to combat it, and one of the most powerful weapons is regular exercise at the gym.

1. Boosting Mood with Endorphins

Exercise has long been known to trigger the release of endorphins, the body's natural mood lifters. During the winter months, when natural sunlight is limited, working out in a well-lit gym can help stimulate the release of these feel-good chemicals. Endorphins help reduce feelings of sadness and boost your overall mood, making it an excellent way to combat the winter blues.

2. Combating Fatigue and Lethargy

SAD often brings with it a sense of fatigue and lethargy. Regular exercise can help counteract these symptoms by increasing your energy levels. Even a brisk 30-minute workout can leave you feeling more invigorated, making it easier to face the day.

3. Improving Sleep Patterns

The dark winter months can disrupt our natural circadian rhythms and make it difficult to get a good night's sleep. Exercising regularly can help regulate your sleep patterns. People who work out regularly often find it easier to fall asleep and enjoy more restful nights, which can significantly alleviate SAD symptoms.

4. Enhancing Self-Esteem and Confidence

SAD can have a detrimental impact on self-esteem and self-confidence. Exercise at the gym, whether through resistance training or group fitness classes, can lead to improved physical fitness and body image, boosting your self-esteem and confidence. Setting and achieving fitness goals can also give you a sense of accomplishment, further enhancing your self-worth.

5. Providing a Social Outlet

SAD can lead to social isolation and withdrawal from social activities. Going to the gym not only provides a structured and productive way to spend your time but also offers a social outlet. Interacting with others during group workouts, fitness classes, or simply having a friendly chat with fellow gym-goers can help alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation.

The winter months don't have to be a season of gloom and inactivity. Regular exercise at the gym can be a powerful tool to ward off Seasonal Affective Disorder. Whether you're lifting weights, joining fitness classes, or simply walking on the treadmill, the benefits of exercise extend far beyond physical fitness. So, gear up, hit the gym, and let the power of exercise shine through your winter days.

Best Halloween decorations for your front door

With under two weeks to go until Halloween, now’s about the time to start thinking about just how much you want to show the world how much you love this annual holiday

Your front door is a great place to start, for which there is a wide variety of different decorations to consider when spookying up the front of your home. A front door is something everyone is guaranteed to have, so, pull your skeletons out of your closet, hang up the cobwebs, and carve those pumpkins, because it’s time to add some serious creep to your neighbourhood.

Pumpkins
Let’s begin with the obvious. First of all, pumpkins aren’t always big and orange. You can find pumpkins in many different sizes, colours, and even shapes. It’s good to find a mix of pumpkins of different colours and formations for a dynamic and unique display. You can find pumpkins that are green, and others that are pure white, otherwise known as ‘white ghosts.’ These would look great carefully arranged on and around the porch area, appealing to any nearby Halloween enthusiast. Additionally, pumpkins can also be painted, and painting them gold and black, for instance, would really add a special spooky zing to your front porch. Baskets can help with displaying pumpkins, whether hanging or placed securely on the ground, and can improve the appearance of your front porch area, adding a sense of charm and quaintness.

Wreaths and banners
Wreaths might be generic when it comes to doors, whether it’s a public holiday or not, but they can be very effective in portraying the Halloween atmosphere if done correctly. Black feather wreaths, for instance, can omit that spooky aura, especially when coupled with decorative black crows perched on artificial branches.
Although perhaps a basic way of celebrating the holiday, a banner can be a quicker, more direct way of showing your appreciation for Halloween, without all the fluff of additional decorations. What’s great about banners is you have complete control over what they read, regardless of whether or not the banner will be accompanied by other decorations.

Healthy Halloween Treats for Children
Halloween is a time of fun, costumes, and of course, treats! But who says those treats can’t be healthy? Here are some creative and nutritious ideas that your children will love.

1. Pumpkin Smoothies: Blend together pumpkin puree, banana, Greek yogurt, honey, and a dash of cinnamon to create a delicious and nutritious smoothie. It’s packed with vitamins and gives your children a taste of the season.

2. Fruit Monsters: Use a variety of fruits to create cute, edible monsters. For example, you can use strawberries for the body, blueberries for the eyes, and apple slices for the mouth. It’s a fun way to get your kids to eat more fruit.

3. Veggie Skeletons: Arrange different types of vegetables on a platter in the shape of a skeleton. You can use cucumber slices for the spine, bell pepper slices for the ribs, and cherry tomatoes for the skull. Serve it with a healthy dip like hummus.

4. Popcorn Hands: Fill disposable gloves with popcorn and tie them off at the wrist. Add a candy corn at the tip of each finger to create fingernails. This treat is low in sugar and high in fibre.

5. Dark Chocolate Covered Apples: Melt dark chocolate and dip apple slices into it. Dark chocolate is healthier than milk chocolate and apples are high in fibre and vitamin C.

Remember, Halloween is about balance. It’s okay to enjoy some candy, but incorporating these healthy treats can make the holiday fun and nutritious!

Journey to the Semi-Finals
Rugby World Cup 2023

The Rugby World Cup 2023 has been a thrilling spectacle of skill, strategy, and sportsmanship. As we approach the semi-finals, let’s take a look at the teams that have made it this far and their journey to the top four.

One of the standout matches so far was between England and Fiji. England emerged victorious with a score of 30-24, showcasing their prowess and determination. This thrilling encounter was a testament to the unpredictable and exciting nature of the sport.

Argentina was the first team to secure a spot in the semi-finals. They came from 10-0 down to beat Wales 29-17 in a nail-biting encounter in Marseille. Dan Bigger converted his own try after a quarter of an hour before kicking a penalty to give the Pool C winners a healthy advantage. Two penalties from Emiliano Boffelli reduced the deficit before half-time, and he kicked two more after the break to put Los Pumas in front for the first time. Tomos Williams darted over under the posts to put Wales back into the lead, but prop Joel Sclavi barged over to restore the Argentinian advantage before veteran fly-half Nicolas Sanchez scored an interception try late on to seal the win.

New Zealand, the three-time world champions, held off Ireland to secure a remarkable 28-24 victory at the Stade de France. They will play Argentina in Paris on Friday.

Another notable match was between France and South Africa. In a nail-biting finish, South Africa edged out France by just one point, winning 29-28. The match was a rollercoaster of emotions, with both teams displaying exceptional skill and tenacity. South Africa now find themselves as favourites and take on England next Sunday.

The semi-finals promise to be an exciting showdown between some of the best teams in rugby. Each team has shown exceptional skill and determination to reach this stage. As we look forward to these matches, anticipation is building. Who will emerge victorious and make it to the finals? Only time will tell.

Adding value to your home with landscape lighting

External lighting doesn’t only provide security, ambiance, and aesthetic appeal, it can also increase the value of your home

Landscape lighting can boost the value of a property as it can have a powerful impact on curb appeal in the eyes of any prospective buyer. Outside lighting means that all of your outside space is usable 24 hours a day, which itself is a massive added convenience for homeowners, as opposed to a patio area that’s not thoroughly lit and therefore inaccessible during the latter parts of the day.
Added security is always going to be a perk snuck into landscape lighting, whether it’s motion-sensed lighting or not; it shows someone is at home which is enough to deter any potential burglar.
A well-lit home, including the external areas, generally adds more cheeriness and lifts the mood of the home, helping with first impressions but also overall mood of the property. When it comes to selling in particular, it’s also a sign of confidence, as having brightly lit spaces shows you have nothing to hide. It can also highlight charming features of the garden spaces, including the natural beauty of the plants and flowers adorning your gardens, and illuminate pathways.

These are our top three picks for types of landscape lighting on the market:

Ambient lights that accentuate pathways leading from the gate to your home, outdoor post lights are not as bright as others and provide a subtle illumination of driveways and long stretches of walkways.

Spotlights project narrow beams of light making them easier to aim and therefore ideal if you’re looking to highlight specific individual features in your gardens.

Otherwise referred to as ‘well lights’, inground lights are integrated into the ground itself, making them a seamless yet bright addition to your outside space. They are circular-shaped light fixtures that add sophistication and character to the exterior during the darker hours of the day. The light they emit is so strong that an entire tree can be illuminated.
