Located a stone's throw away from one of London's busiest roads, lies a green oasis of calm and serenity in which people spend their time planting seeds and watching them grow.

In partnership with our friends at Meanwhile Gardens, the ongoing "Grow to Eat" project, which is run by Deena Joy Kestenbaum at our Woodfield Road annex, has become a key element in our vision of establishing a 'green corridor' in the heart of the urban landscape.

By building additional food cultivation infrastructure, including sustainable greenhouse facilities and 'potager style' beds, we hope to provide the opportunity and inspiration to grow more food for use by the community - as part of the ongoing Greening Westminster programme.

It also offers people a chance to tap into a different way of thinking, cultivate new skills and connect with others. As Deena says:

"I think all of us are galloping through our lives and the whole sowing, planting, watching, tending, caring for plants, makes us slow down our busy heads and become more mindful about what we're actually doing."

‘Flower Power’ to the People… What in the carnation is going on here then?

10/06/2026

Given that residents living in the Harrow Road ward in our part of North Paddington, have been historically impacted by environmental factors, such as poor air quality, lack of trees, open spaces, and insufficient exercise, walking and cycling, our vision on how to improve the everyday lives of the local community had to be both bold and transformational.

Bringing her RHS - Royal Horticultural Society-training to the table WECH CEO, Suzanne Wolfe, took advantage of Westminster City Council’s Greening Fund, to initiate a grand plan centred around the art and science of gardening, while creating a 'virtual green highway' through one of the most traffic-burdened areas of London.

This work would not have been possible without the aforementioned Greening Westminster project and the building of partnerships with like-minded organisations. As Suzanne says:

"We are really delighted to be working with Meanwhile Gardens, the Paddington Development Trust, Learning Disability Network London and the HGCA, and together we are doing a lot to improve the different ways that people can get involved in acquiring new skills while uplifting the wellbeing within the neighbourhood."

The Greening Westminster project is a major initiative run by Westminster City Council Council to enhance biodiversity, combat climate change, and bring nature into urban and gray spaces across the borough. It is a central component of the council's Fairer Westminster strategy and Ecological Emergency plan.

WECH in Bloom is not just a one day event, we continue the conversation around plant identification, cultivation and biodiversity across the community, with our window box competition for local residents all year round.

Along with our partners, which include the HGCA, Meanwhile Gardens, Learning Disability Network London, and Climate Champions courtesy of the Paddington Development Trust, we have built a 'nature highway' in one of the most challenged neighbourhoods in Westminster.

We also appreciate all the help and support from our local representatives, including Councillor Concia Albert, who has been a key player in WECH’s infrastructure development journey.

"I love people gelling with people..."

Meet Anita, she also loves flowers and being an active member of the local community.

Residents in North Paddington are creating a community-led "nature highway" linking green spaces across one of Westminster's most disadvantaged neighbourhoods.

The project aims to improve access to nature, boost biodiversity, and involve hundreds of local people in transforming underused urban spaces.

Our Monday morning 'Grow to Eat' workshop, in partnership with the lovely Meanwhile Gardens and Learning Disability Network London, goes from strength to strength at our Woodfield Road facility.

By creating additional food cultivation infrastructure, including sustainable greenhouse facilities and 'potager style' beds, we hope to provide the opportunity and inspiration to grow more food for use by the community as part of the ongoing Greening Westminster programme.

Q: Why did the tomato blush?
A: Because it saw the salad dressing!

We had to advise WECH TV Anchorman, David Little, to save his slightly risque opening gambit to newly-elected local Councillor Rhys Thomas, for a rainy day, when the two met at the annual 'WECH in Bloom' Day.

Now in its third year, the blossoming 'WECH in Bloom' event and competition, planting window boxes and containers with community members, is just one strand of our wider plan to bring 'Flower Power' to the people.

Alongside the WECH Summer Festival with its plethora of cultivation, biodiversity activities, plant identification competitions and gardening tips, there’s also the Guerilla Gardening bulb event in the autumn, ensuring the 'greening' of our small corner of North Paddington continues anew.

It was great to see our local representatives offering their time, support and appreciation of the work we're doing within the community.

Final word goes to WECH TV Anchorman David Little...

"Why did the scarecrow win an award? Because they were outstanding in their field?"

The third year of our annual ‘WECH in Bloom’ day is not only an event and competition that creates a buzz of anticipation around the benefits derived from the greening of urban landscapes, it also allows us to enhance our food cultivation infrastructure.

A case in point is our new ‘potager style’ beds, which will provide the opportunity and inspiration to grow more food for use by the community.

We sent WECH’s Anchorman, David Little, down to Watson Gardens to speak to local residents and do some digging… and singing 🎵
