BRECHIN CASTLE
One of Scotland’s most significant historic castles, set within renowned designed policies on the banks of the River South Esk. Occupying a commanding position in Angus, the A-listed castle sits at the heart of an exceptional estate extending to approximately 64 acres, including around 40 acres of magnificent, designed policies, a renowned 13-acre walled garden, river fishing, two gate lodges; West Lodge and New Lodge and three further estate houses and cottages, all carefully positioned to preserve the Castle’s outlook and setting.
In 1296, King John Balliol left here to submit the crown to Edward I, helping spark the First War of Scottish Independence. William Wallace recaptured it in 1297, but in 1303 it fell to Edward I’s army after a siege led by the “War Wolf” engine, despite the legendary defence of Sir Thomas Maule, who died defending it. The castle was then destroyed and lay in ruins for over 300 years.
In 1634, Patrick Maule, Earl of Panmure and a descendant of
Sir Thomas, revived the estate as a family seat. Later rebuilding — culminating in Alexander Edward’s reconstruction, completed in 1711 — shaped the castle as it stands today, blending medieval and 18th-century elements. It later became the seat of the Earls of Dalhousie and remains a historic landmark and family home.
