“It became a reflection on the past, but also a real opportunity to explore the community now and their hopes for the future. What about the people who are doing this huge transformation - the Greenland team, but also the builders on site - how can I get conversations with them about their ambitions?”

Before restaging this evocative piece of Ram Quarter history, artist Neville Gabie spent months meeting the people who lived, worked, and built Greenland's award-winning Ram Quarter - including former brewers, builders, residents and business owners in Wandsworth Town, and members of the redevelopment team.

The photograph, and the lightbox artwork it inspired, bridges past and present - old Wandsworth and new.

Two dinners, seventy years apart - one story of community.

Shining from Ram Quarter's Heritage Centre, and visible from the square below, is a lightbox artwork by Neville Gabie - showing Greenland's recreation of a 1948 Young’s Brewery Christmas Dinner - held in the same Wandsworth Town Hall room where the original dinner was held and photograph was taken.

This week, Futurecity is exploring the impact of this luminous piece of public art.

Every seat at The Dinner mirrored its 1948 counterpart. The guests: former brewers, residents and members of the local community, construction workers, and members of the Ram Quarter project team.

Art that connects Ram Quarter's past to its present and future.

Redeveloping a site as culturally and historically rich as Ram Quarter gave Greenland the opportunity to dig deeply into the heritage of the site. Working with Futurecity and EPR Architects, Greenland invited artist Neville Gabie to explore the old Ram Brewery archive.

He uncovered stories, images and artifacts that inspired Dinner - his lightbox artwork for the site’s Heritage Centre:
“I was astounded by the sheer amount of material that was in there and how interesting it was. The thing that really came across to me was how much Young’s was a family - it was a business, it was a brewery - but it was really a family.” - Neville Gabie

Over the next week, Futurecity will be revisiting this evocative creation - a tribute to those who worked at Young's brewery, and those who have contributed to the site's modern transformation.

Congratulations to Aaron Joyce, the winner of Greenland’s Ram Quarter Open House photography competition! It’s a vibrant photograph that highlights the variety of materials and styles of Ram Quarter’s buildings, and captures the greening of the River Wandle as part of the redevelopment. Ram Quarter, in partnership with NHS Blood and Transplant, is welcoming all members of the local community to register as blood donors at Ram Quarter on 16 September, from 10am to 4:30pm. You can book an appointment via the link in our bio or walk in on the day for the opportunity to find out your blood type and give back, helping to save lives and support our hospitals.

Ram Quarter tours for London’s Open House festival became fully booked on the day of release earlier this week! So by popular demand, we’ve now opened extra spaces. Architectural and heritage tours led by will be running at 11am, 12pm, 2pm and 3pm on 16 September and you can book from the link in our bio.
