You'll find everything from record labels to florists, graphic designers to jewellers, filmmakers to architects, 3D printers and cabinet makers. We have a cafe and The Village Green shops - including a florist, The Hackney Peddler, and The Well Garden wellbeing centre. We're also lucky to have emerging theatre space The Hackney Showroom on site. The Hackney Downs family helps to nurture each resident on an individual level, creating links and opportunities outside of the old print-works.

WHAT YOU SEE, WHAT IT TOOK. For Night Dreamer 🌍 TWINN project, an hour-long album takes an hour to duplicate. For founder Neal Birnie that means the making of each reel-to-reel moves at the same speed it will eventually be heard.⁠
⁠
We sat down with Neal inside his studio at Hackney Downs Studios, where workstations and a listening corner give space to properly sit with the music.⁠ Here, every reel-to-reel copy is made in real time directly from an original master tape on 1970s Studer A80 machines.⁠ ⁠But the process starts long before the tape begins to turn.⁠

From securing original master recordings and restoring tapes to calibrating machines, testing speakers and making close to ten packaging prototypes, Neal reveals how TWINN has been developed under the skylight of his studio through patience, testing and learning to make things again when they aren’t quite right.⁠

Inside ._ great interior design starts with finding the story. Creative directors and founder Andreas Christodoulou works with artists and craftspeople to create spaces with their own identity, usually looking beyond the brief to understand the people and feeling behind a project.⁠
⁠
is one of those. Starting from a conversation in the Hackney Downs Studios courtyard, the project drew on the Italian restaurants and bars established by migrants across East London, bringing those references into a space with artwork from fellow residents becoming a part of the story too.⁠

There’s a ritual to walking into Artist, Robyn Yeang’s () studio. A “howdy” said out loud whether anyone’s listening or not. A small thing but it says a lot about how she works. Fully immersed and letting .co space at Hackney Downs Studios pull her into the zone of making.⁠

Once she’s inside, she doesn’t overthink it and in her own words “just starts painting, just starts doing.”⁠

YOU’RE INVITED. Join us for the launch night of ASPIRANTES, a new body of work by photographer Joe Hart (Joe Hart) at the Hackney Downs Studios gallery, documenting the raw and independent wrestling circuit of Lucha Libre across the regions of Mexico City and Oaxaca ⁠

Lucha libre is the pulsating heart of Mexico. Most people encounter it in its most polished form, wrestlers elevated to the status of film stars in arenas built for spectacle. Joe went looking for the other version, rougher, more alive, where the boundary between performer and audience doesn’t exist.⁠
⁠
He spent a month chasing every independent show he could find, in the community halls and car parks the mainstream long ago moved past. What drew him in was the storytelling, the athletics, the costume and the giant beers. What kept him coming back were the same faces, show after show. And the aspirantes, the ones who put on the mask and carry everything that comes with it.⁠
