Hackney Downs Studios is home to a community of over 100 studios full of artists, designers, makers and independent creative businesses.

You'll find everything from record labels to florists, graphic designers to jewellers, filmmakers to architects, 3D printers and cabinet makers. We have a cafe and The Village Green shops - including a florist, The Hackney Peddler, and The Well Garden wellbeing centre. We're also lucky to have emerging theatre space The Hackney Showroom on site. The Hackney Downs family helps to nurture each resident on an individual level, creating links and opportunities outside of the old print-works.

YOU’RE INVITED. Join us for the launch night of ASPIRANTES, a new body of work by photographer Joe Hart (Joe Hart) at the Hackney Downs Studios gallery, documenting the raw and independent wrestling circuit of Lucha Libre across the regions of Mexico City and Oaxaca ⁠

Lucha libre is the pulsating heart of Mexico. Most people encounter it in its most polished form, wrestlers elevated to the status of film stars in arenas built for spectacle. Joe went looking for the other version, rougher, more alive, where the boundary between performer and audience doesn’t exist.⁠

He spent a month chasing every independent show he could find, in the community halls and car parks the mainstream long ago moved past. What drew him in was the storytelling, the athletics, the costume and the giant beers. What kept him coming back were the same faces, show after show. And the aspirantes, the ones who put on the mask and carry everything that comes with it.⁠

It’s time we update you on the full picture. Chances are you’ve stepped inside a part of Hackney Downs Studios but it’s probably a little unclear what exactly is apart of this East London destination and how it all connects. ⁠

Twelve years ago we took a disused printworks and transformed it into an ecosystem exclusively for creatives. Now with 200+ studios and workshops, coworking, a gallery, wellness spaces, restaurant and retail, there’s a whole lot going on here.⁠

Worn leather boots. Weathered chaps. A potato hessian sack hanging on the wall, overlooking rows of hand thrown cowboy crockery. From the moment you step inside Curata, founded by artist Robyn Yeang () you’re met with the warmth of Western soul.⁠

It’s been two years since Robyn turned to painting through a difficult period in her life in search a sense of freedom. What came out the other side is a fascinating practice of rustic, whimsical Western tableware that lives across ranches and homes far beyond East London.⁠

Saturday 11 July, Our Time Is Now! by Dom Servini head of Wah Wah 45s takes over The Courtyard for a one off open air summer special with music, food, drinks, fashion and games.⁠

Taking us from afternoon to evening with a six hour summertime session, Dom is joined by Patrick Forge Patrick Forge Dingwalls and NTS selector, alongside Chris and Cyndi aka Cyndi Handson Ellesse for an eclectic lineup of dancefloor focused jazz, northern soul, bruk, house, hip hop and more, running live through Audio Gold’s vintage Fohhn sound-system.⁠

Hackney Downs Studios presents Convergent Matter.⁠
⁠
Coming up at Hackney Downs Studios, 16 artists come together for a group exhibition that celebrates the physical act of making through an exploration of topics and ideas including mathematics, relationships and urban satire.
⁠
You’re invited to step inside to explore a world showcasing how side-by-side processes inevitably affect each other in the alchemy of a shared studio environment. Where the “matter” of each practice converges through collective proximity, revealing threads between the work when they are exhibited together.⁠

Across oil painting, photography, lino print, graphic design and repurposed industrial materials discover the many artistic styles and practices living within the studios. ⁠

Recently, food and event curation studio .xyz swapped Hackney Downs Studios for a take over of a space at our sister site for the return of their evolving dining series.⁠
⁠
Part dinner, part performance, the experience ‘Hot Seat” reimagined the classic icebreaker through food, conversation and the element of surprise.
