The Do's and Don'ts of Working From Home Rule # 5

Keeping distraction at bay
One of the bigger challenges of working from home is the distraction from family and friends. It’s so easy to divert attention to messages from live chat platforms pinging through on your phone at regular intervals.
Checking through these messages can take away the focus from your work. It’s impossible to tell family and friends to message you at your preferred times. None of us would be so mindful so as to remember messaging times. The self-control rests with you.
To keep the discipline read your messages from family and friends during your break times or ideally after you have clocked off from work. If you do this consistently you will be conveying a message in silent mode that you are not checking messages as they come through but only at times that suit you.
The discipline of working from home requires rules that you need to observe to remain productive. It’s so easy to derail to a social mode. Don’t allow yourself to get distracted. Keep your focus and remain productive!

The Do's and Don'ts of Working From Home Rule #4

Just as you did at school, you should draw up a timetable for your work. It’s a great tool to maintain discipline. Your timetable should be broken up into slots where you do some intensive work, some creative work and some light work. Respect these slots to remain focused and ending the day having time for yourself.
Working from home allows you to remain flexible and to be able to fit in your other duties around your work, whether this is going to the gym or taking care of someone in need or any other personal task. The focus however should remain in completing what you set out to achieve at the start of the day while taking advantage of the flexibility of working from home.
There will always be days when you can’t keep to your timetable in which case reorganise your time to complete your work tasks. This may mean at times having to stay up until late, but you will get the satisfaction of having completed what you set out to do. Many of us are worriers, we go to sleep thinking about our work. That’s not healthy. You want a good deep sleep to start the next day fresh and to keep up your productivity!

The Do’s and Don’ts of Working from Home - Rule #'3
Take a break – don’t be a hard taskmaster
When we work from home, we can get carried away working for long hours without a break. The number of steps we take probably would not exceed 100 when the recommended number of steps to keep fit is 10,000 a day!
There is some proven data that working for long hours without a break reduces our productivity or turn it the other way around and read this as 'how working fewer hours can increase our productivity'.
The longer we work without a break the more time it takes to finish a task. Our mind can only absorb so much over a period of time and then starts switching off. When this happens, our
minds wander away from the task we have set to achieve.
Try not to work for long hours in one stretch. At times however there is no getting away from working long hours to deliver our task in the time that we need to. To help you keep focused on your task do make sure you have a small break at regular intervals. It just helps you to remain focused.
To maintain productivity, move away from your computer and phone at regular intervals for a good few minutes. Get up and have a good stretch or walk around your house or look out through your window to give some rest to your mind. Come back to your task after a small break and observe how much better you feel to continue working.
Don’t be a hard task master. Get breaks in between your work hours and remain productive.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Working from Home - Rule 2

Whether you have a fully kitted out office in your home or you are working from your dining table or sofa the fact is that your work is physically located where you are – that’s at home. The temptation to do just ‘’one more task’’ after your dinner or after putting kids to bed is tempting which may seem like a good idea but not quite so, it certainly is not a productive way to work.
We know that blue light emitting from our computers and phones can cause digital eye strain, but more so studies have also found that the use of light emitting devices immediately before bedtime may cause sleep deficiency. A disturbed sleep inevitably leads to a feeling of fatigue the day after which will affect your productivity.
Working from home needs discipline. Having set your working hours in rule No.1 make sure you adhere to it. At the end of your working schedule make it a definite finish and go home! By creating a routine, it will allow you to engage your mind and presence in the other activities. Switch off at the end of your working day and start the next day fully rested and with a fresh mind = being productive

The Do’s and Don’ts of Working from Home
Working from home requires discipline. Either we drift away and lose focus or get so immersed with our work that we spend long hours at our computer and phone. For our next few posts, we will look at a five point rule to help remain productive.
Rule 1 Set working hours
Set yourself working hours and stick to it. It eliminates productive procrastination that can so easily happen at home. There is always something you can be doing at home, cleaning the bathroom, putting on a load of washing, hoovering – all of which are tasks that need to be completed and tasks which won’t help you to achieve your work goal. Having a time by which you need to start work and finish allows you to schedule time for your home chores. Work when you work, stay focused and be productive.
