Ever walked into a room made of natural wood and instantly felt like taking a deep breath? That’s not an accident, that’s the power of Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT).
Think of CLT as giant, super-strong wooden building blocks. By gluing layers of wood together in alternating directions, we get a material that’s as strong as steel and concrete, but way better for us and the planet.

Most homeowners get retrofit sequencing wrong.
They spend thousands on a heat pump or solar panels, but leave the old windows, leaky walls, and countless draughts untouched.
It's a bit like trying to heat your home with the front door half open.
No matter how efficient your heating system is, you're still losing a huge amount of heat.
That's why the order of improvements matters.
The most successful retrofits follow a Fabric First approach:
1. Improve the building fabric
Upgrade wall, roof and floor insulation.
Replace inefficient windows and doors.
Improve airtightness by sealing unwanted gaps and leaks.
2. Add proper ventilation As homes become more airtight, fresh air becomes increasingly important. A well-designed ventilation system helps maintain healthy indoor air quality while controlling moisture and condensation.
3. Upgrade the heating system Only once the home's heat demand has been reduced should you consider a heat pump or other low-carbon heating system. A better-performing building requires a smaller, more efficient heating system, reducing installation and running costs.
This approach delivers more comfort, lower bills, better air quality, and better value for money.
The biggest mistake isn't choosing the wrong technology.
It's installing the right technology at the wrong time.

Stop burning cash. Start tapping into the earth.
A lot of people hear about ground source heat pumps and think:
“How can 10°C from the ground possibly heat my house?”
Fair question. The truth is it doesn’t. Not directly.

So what’s actually going on?
The ground gives you a steady source of low‑grade heat usually somewhere between 8 and 13°C, depending on the depth, the soil and the local conditions.
That temperature on its own is useless for heating a house.
What matters is what happens next.
The heat pump takes that low-level energy and lifts it.
It pulls heat out of the ground, passes it through a refrigerant, and then compresses it which raises the temperature to something you can actually use for heating and hot water.
So you’re not heating your home from 10°C.
You’re taking stable background energy and upgrading it into proper, usable heat.
One important thing people often miss: the lower the temperature your system needs to run at, the better the whole thing works.

What does it feel like to live with it?
It’s very different from a boiler.
No bursts of heat. No cycling on and off. No hot then cold.
Just a steady, even temperature across the whole house.
It works particularly well with radiant systems like wall heating or ceiling panels where heat is delivered gently through surfaces rather than pushed around with air.
The result is simple: the house just feel right!
Not stuffy, not dry, not uneven. Just comfortable.

And in summer?
It flips. Instead of bringing heat in, it takes excess heat out of the house and sends it back into the ground.
That gives you a softer kind of cooling, not air-con blasting cold air at you, just keeping the house from overheating.
At the same time, you’re doing something useful in the background:
you’re putting some of that heat back into the ground after winter.
So over time, the system stays balanced instead of being constantly drained.

Why Clay Plasters are Exceptionally Sustainable?

We’re starting to see a clear shift in the UK. Hot summers and heatwaves are becoming more frequent, and suddenly many homes are struggling with overheating.
For years, everything we design has been focused on one thing: keeping homes warm but going forward, we’ll need to think just as seriously about keeping them cool.
Most people will say: “No problem, just install air conditioning.” but that’s not the only way, and not always the right one.

Heat pumps can do more than just heat.
Heat pumps are becoming a big part of the conversation in the UK, mainly as a low‑carbon alternative to boilers.
What’s less known is that some systems are reversible.
That means in summer they can take heat out of the house and release it outside, effectively working the other way around.
But this isn’t typical air conditioning.
• it won’t blast cold air
• it won’t aggressively chill the space
• it simply drops the temperature a few degrees and prevents overheating
It’s better described as comfort cooling, keeping the indoor environment stable rather than trying to make it cold.

Why it matters?
If we respond to hotter summers by just adding more AC everywhere, we’re heading in the wrong direction.
Cooling uses a lot of energy — especially at peak times when the grid is already under pressure.
At the same time, most UK homes aren’t designed for heat. They’re built to keep it in and that’s exactly why they now overheat.

The catch:
This isn’t a plug‑and‑play solution.
For it to work properly, the house needs to be:
• well insulated and airtight
• Equiped with MVHR system
• designed to reduce heat gain
• and fitted with the right emitters to allow effective cooling
That’s why it works best in:
• new builds, or
• proper, well‑thought‑through renovations

Final thought:
We’ve spent decades learning how to keep heat in.
Now the challenge is learning how to keep it out in a smart, efficient way.
Cooling is coming. The question is whether we design for it properly or fix it later with energy‑hungry solutions.
