Here are some common mistakes worth avoiding:

📐 Planning around looks rather than how you cook
Think about the position of your fridge, sink, hob, worktops and storage before choosing finishes.

🔌 Not planning enough sockets
Kettles, coffee machines, air fryers and other appliances quickly use them up. Think about where everything will actually live.

💡 Treating lighting as an afterthought
A single ceiling light rarely does the job. Worktop lighting and well-positioned task lighting can make a huge difference.

📦 Underestimating storage
Plan for what you own now, not how tidy the kitchen looks in the showroom.

Open-plan kitchens and living areas can completely change how a home feels, but they’re not automatically the right choice for everyone.

Before removing walls, think about how your family actually uses the space:

🍽️ Do you want cooking, dining and relaxing to happen in one connected area?
☀️ Would opening the layout bring more natural light into darker rooms?
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Do you like being able to keep an eye on the kids while cooking?
🔇 Or would separate rooms give you more privacy and somewhere quiet to escape?

There’s also a middle ground. Wider openings, sliding or glazed doors and partially separated zones can create better flow without turning the entire ground floor into one room.

The best layout isn’t necessarily the most open one. It’s the one that works for the way you live.

In this case, our work started with something important: properly supporting a chimney breast after previous work had left it without the required support. Once the structural work was completed to the surveyor’s specification and approved by Building Control, we moved on to the finishing touches.

The result included this bespoke feature wall with integrated TV space, enclosed storage, illuminated display shelves and additional shelving on either side. 📚✨
