A Bradford landlord has just been found guilty of multiple housing offences across his HMOs β€” with a "significant financial penalty" coming on top of Β£43,000 already on his record.

The charges cover rodent infestations, broken fire doors, leaking roofs and blocked drains across properties housing around 100 tenants. In one case, a tenant was told to place a rug over a damp patch from a ceiling leak. In another, adhesive tape had been used to "repair" a roof that continued leaking during the council's own inspection.

The judge called the evidence "overwhelming."

It's an extreme case β€” but it sits inside a clear wider trend. Councils are enforcing more aggressively, fines are getting larger, and the Renters' Rights Act has raised the bar on property condition, not lowered it.
