Penalties are up to £7000 issued by the local authority. An EPC is much cheaper!

This week I have been in contact with Trading Standards after a customer was contacted by a rogue ‘energy’ company from Facebook which had quoted him £60k to install solar panels, change his loft insulation and replace his bathroom and kitchen. They then gave him a generous discount to bring the price to £3500!
They then tried scare tactics of “the microfibres in the loft insulation are going to give him Cancer.”
They told him he won’t be able to rent out or sell his house unless he has these works carried out.

I explained to him that the Energy Performance Certificate will give recommendations if he chooses to increase his energy rating. However, he may not need solar panels or new insulation. It certainly would not recommend a new kitchen or bathroom!
Thankfully he had not handed over any money.

Trading Standards are now investigating and assisting this customer.

If you are thinking of getting home improvements please use a reputable company. Your local trading standards can give you a list of suppliers.
Please don’t entertain cold callers.
