MTD: Making Tax Digital, or Making Tax Difficult?
Last month, 7th August marked the first submission deadline for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax in the UK.
For landlords and self-employed individuals with an income exceeding £50,000, (reducing to £30,000 from April 2027), this represents a significant change in how financial records are kept and reported to HMRC.
Instead of filing everything once a year for Self Assessment, MTD requires taxpayers to keep digital records and provide quarterly updates through compatible software.
The aim is simple:
More up-to-date records 🗓️
Fewer last-minute errors ❌
Better visibility over income and expenses 🔎
The property industry is naturally evolving. Landlords are moving away from keeping their records in notepads and filing cabinets towards using increasingly sophisticated, data-driven software.
But forcing people to change the way they work raises a question:
Has Making Tax Digital genuinely made managing property finances easier, or has it simply added another layer of admin?
At BricksIQ, we believe technology should reduce manual work, improve efficiency and help people make better decisions, not just create another process to follow.
For those who have completed their first MTD submission, how did you find it?
