Let’s hope this handyman has finally stopped dabbling in plumbing work!

Unfortunately, this kind of issue is more common than we’d like to see. In this case, a lever shut-off valve was installed on the hot water outlet pipe from the cylinder. The problem? If that valve is ever turned off—or, as in this instance, accidentally falls into the off position—it also shuts off the vent pipe from the cylinder.

This is a serious safety concern. If the cylinder’s safety controls were to fail while the valve is closed, the heated water inside the cylinder would have no route to escape via the vent pipe. This could lead to the cylinder splitting—or even worse, dangerously expanding and failing entirely. Safe to say it has been removed and piped up correctly.
