One of Caithness' Hidden Gems

If you're looking for a walk that's steeped in history and rewards you with unforgettable views, Whaligoe Steps is a must.

Carved into the cliffside, the 365 stone steps lead down to a natural harbour where generations of herring fishermen and fisherwomen once worked tirelessly, carrying heavy baskets of fish back up the cliffs.

Today, it's a peaceful place where you can pause, take in the fresh sea air and admire the dramatic Caithness coastline. Keep an eye out for seabirds, listen to the waves below, and don't forget your camera—the views are spectacular.

Lybster has a rich history rooted in fishing, the sea and Highland resilience.

Originally a small crofting settlement on the East coast of Caithness, Lybster grew rapidly during the 19th century because of the booming herring industry. At its peak, Lybster became one of Scotland’s busiest herring ports, with hundreds of boats filling the harbour during the fish season.

The harbour itself was developed in the 1800’s to support this growth, and the village became alive with fisherman, merchants and families tied closer to the sea.

People travelled from across Scotland to work the ‘herring boom’ and Lybster’s waterfront would once have been packed with boats, nets and barrels waiting to be exported across Europe.

One particularly fascinating part of local history is the villages connection to the clearance era and the movement of Highland communities toward fishing settlements as crofting life changed across the Highlands.

The waves at Lybster Lighthouse are something else – crashing against the rugged Caithness coastline with raw power and beauty that has made this spot renowned for its dramatic seas.

Whether it’s wild winter waves or the endless sound of the ocean rolling in, there’s nowhere quite like standing behind the lighthouse watching nature at its finest.
