Tenants — did you know you now need to give 2 months’ notice if you want to end your tenancy?

Since the Renters’ Rights Act came into effect on 1 May 2026, most private rented tenancies in England are now assured periodic tenancies.

If you want to leave your tenancy, you generally need to give your landlord at least 2 months’ notice.

Your notice must be given in writing and normally needs to end on the day your rent is due, or the day before. You also remain responsible for paying your rent during the notice period.

There are some exceptions, particularly for certain tenancies that began before 1 May 2026, so if you're unsure about your own circumstances, it's always worth checking your tenancy information or speaking to your letting agent.

A useful change to be aware of — for tenants and landlords alike.
