📚 April Book Club Pick: Do Hard Things

At CoWork Maldon, we’re all about growth — not just in business, but in mindset, resilience and how we show up every day.

That’s why for April, our Book Club pick is:

Do Hard Things by Steve Magness

This month’s read is all about redefining what it really means to be “tough” — and why the traditional idea of pushing harder, grinding more, and never slowing down might actually be holding us back.

💡 What the Book Is About

In Do Hard Things, Steve Magness challenges the idea that toughness is about constant intensity or powering through at all costs. Instead, he introduces a more sustainable and effective approach:

👉 Real toughness is about consistency, adaptability, and emotional control
👉 It’s about showing up when things feel uncomfortable
👉 And knowing when to push forward — and when to pause and reset

For business owners, entrepreneurs and professionals, this couldn’t be more relevant. Whether it’s navigating uncertainty, making difficult decisions, or staying focused when motivation dips, learning how to “do hard things” is a game-changer.

🚀 Why We Chose This Book

Following on from Flip It, which focused on mindset and perspective, Do Hard Things takes things a step further.

It’s about action.

It’s about building the kind of resilience that doesn’t just help you survive challenges — but actually grow from them.

In a world that often glorifies burnout and constant hustle, this book offers a refreshing (and much-needed) shift in thinking.

Most people aren’t struggling with discipline.

They’re living a life that doesn’t fit them.

Same routine.
Same expectations.
Same pace…
no matter how they feel.

High energy? Push.
Low energy? Still push.
Burnt out? Push harder.

That’s not consistency.
That’s misalignment.

Because your life isn’t meant to be lived the same way every day.

There are seasons where you should:
🌱 Start and explore
☀️ Go all in and execute
🍂 Step back and refine
❄️ Rest and rebuild

But instead of adjusting your life to match your season…
you try to force yourself to match your life.

That’s why it feels hard.

Even athletes don’t live like that.

They build their entire schedule around cycles:
Training
Performance
Recovery

Not constant output.

Your life should work the same way.

Less forcing.
More aligning.

Less pressure.
Better timing.

Because when your life fits your season,
everything starts to feel easier.

"But I can’t just rest… I have a job." Exactly. It’s not about avoiding responsibilities, it’s about working smarter. Your job won’t always align with your energy levels, so it’s essential to adapt. Use the Eisenhower Matrix to prioritize tasks: tackle what’s urgent and important, schedule what’s important but not urgent, delegate tasks that are urgent but not important, and eliminate tasks that are neither. You don’t need perfect conditions to perform at your best.

Your energy isn’t random.

It’s biological.

Your body is constantly shifting based on hormones:

Dopamine → motivation
Serotonin → mood & energy
Cortisol → stress
Melatonin → rest

So when your energy drops,
it’s not a personality flaw.

It’s chemistry.

And yet—
you expect yourself to feel the same every day.

That’s not how humans work.

Even athletes train around their biology.

They don’t ignore fatigue.
They don’t push through every signal.

They adjust.

So instead of asking:
“Why do I feel like this?”

Start asking:
“What is my body telling me?”

That awareness changes everything.

Feeling stuck doesn’t mean you’re broken.

It usually means you’re unsupported.

You don’t get stuck in a season by accident.

It happens when:
You’re burnt out
You haven’t fully recovered
You’re avoiding something
Or you’re trying to rush the process

And the mistake?

Trying to force your way out.

More discipline.
More pressure.
More pushing.

That doesn’t work.

Even athletes don’t break plateaus by pushing harder.

They adjust.
They recover.
They change approach.

You don’t force your way out of winter.

You rest your way out of it.

You don’t think your way out of autumn.

You act your way out of it.

Different seasons need different solutions.

So if you feel stuck,
don’t ask:

“How do I escape this?”

Ask:

“What does this season actually need from me?”

You don’t need more discipline.

You need awareness.

Because right now, you might be judging yourself
for being in the wrong season.

Low energy?
No motivation?
Overthinking everything?

That’s not failure.
That might be winter.

And here’s the truth:

Even elite athletes don’t perform at their peak all year.

They cycle:
Train → Peak → Recover → Repeat

Because staying in “go mode” 24/7 destroys performance.

But you?
You expect yourself to always be productive.
Always motivated.
Always on.

That’s the problem.

There are seasons where you:
🌱 feel ready to start
☀️ feel unstoppable
🍂 need to step back
❄️ need to rest

The goal isn’t to force summer.

The goal is to recognise where you are
and move accordingly.

So be honest

What season are you in right now?

You’re not inconsistent. You’re cyclical.

Your body is governed by biological rhythms:
– Circadian rhythms (your 24-hour energy clock)
– Hormonal fluctuations that affect focus and mood
– Seasonal changes in light that impact serotonin and melatonin

This means your energy was never designed to be constant.

The problem?
You’re trying to live in “summer” all year.

Peak energy.
Peak output.
Peak performance.

That’s not how humans work.

Even elite athletes don’t train at 100% all year round.

They cycle:
– Build
– Peak
– Recover
– Repeat

Because constant output leads to one thing: burnout.

And your body works the same way.

There are seasons where you:
🌱 feel inspired to start
☀️ have the energy to execute
🍂 need to step back and recalibrate
❄️ are meant to rest and rebuild

But instead of respecting that…
we label ourselves:
“lazy”
“unmotivated”
“inconsistent”

You’re not inconsistent.
You’re cyclical.

The moment you stop fighting your biology
is the moment your momentum returns.

So ask yourself:

What season are you in right now
