Portugal closed its original Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) regime to most new applicants in 2024.

How Does NHR 2.0 Differ?

Compared with Portugal’s original NHR framework, IFICI operates under more targeted eligibility requirements.

Applicants must engage in activities that are deemed strategically important for Portugal’s economy, earn income from a qualifying profession, and work for a company in Portugal that meets the NHR 2.0 criteria.

You also must be a new tax resident in Portugal (meaning you have not been a resident in the last five years).
