The informed client always instruct professional advice. This client was days away from paying £1000’s to fix the so called ‘subsidence’. After a detailed assessment, it turned out to be nothing of the sort, and cost only £100’s to fix. So, if you see cracks, instruct your local building surveyor to have a look. They could knock a ‘0’ off your bill!

Surveying is all about finding clues, and that’s the part I love most about my job. Leaves provide a great indication of the tree specie and the subsequent risk to adjoining properties. It looks like a sycamore at first glance, but something to confirm back at base!

Wet and windy days may be a bit miserable, but they do provide some useful clues on the performance of some building elements. Just taking a moment to step back and allowing the issues to reveal themselves helped expose an overflowing gulley and subsequent damp issues. They can be fixed, but certainly needs to be budgeted for.

Got got some wonky (technical term) doors here. Now, has it dropped to one end or risen in the other? Is it anything to worry about? Openings will always be the weakest part of a structure and has a significant impact on the load paths and how it affects the surrounding building elements. So, to find the answer, I had to stand across the street! Stay tuned...

So, as a Building Surveyor - Surely, that means I don’t have to instruct other Surveys? Wrong! The eagle eyed among you will see me hanging out with my trusted CCTV drainage surveyor checking the drains out on my potential new home. Mr Tommy Madden of A Madden Drainage is punctual, professional, very thorough and the best in the business.

I come across these horizontal cracks to a concrete render finish of a 1960’s mid terrace property. Is it just a bit of cosmetic damage or symptomatic of something more sinister? It’s a good question, and takes significant experience and a detailed understanding of building technology to reach a conclusion. Stay tuned!
