🧱 We didn't come home with an award this year... and that's okay.
🧡 People often ask why we bother entering awards if there's no guarantee of winning.
For us, it isn't really about the trophy.
It's about taking a step back and looking critically at our work. It's about learning from other architects, celebrating great design, and making sure we're always improving for the families who trust us with their homes.
Spending the evening surrounded by inspiring projects reminded us of something important: the best homes aren't always the biggest or the most expensive. They're the ones that make everyday life easier, brighter and more enjoyable for the people who live in them.
We're incredibly proud of the project we entered, and we'll keep designing thoughtful, practical homes that work beautifully for real families.

Before you choose a builder on price… read this.
This is where most people make a very expensive mistake.
There’s a moment in every renovation where it suddenly feels very real.
The drawings are done.
You’ve imagined the finished space.
And then the quotes land.
And they’re… all over the place.
One’s high. One’s low. One’s somewhere in the middle.
So which one do you trust?
Here’s the truth.
Big differences in quotes are completely normal.
It’s usually not about one builder being expensive and another being cheap.
It’s about what’s included… and what isn’t.
Things that can vary massively:
• specification and finishes
• provisional sums (these are allowances, not fixed prices)
• supply vs install
• VAT, scaffolding, site setup
• and even assumptions about foundations
So that “cheapest” quote?
It might not be cheaper at all.
The most important question you can ask is:
What’s not included in this price?
Because that’s where the real differences are.
Choosing a builder isn’t about picking the lowest number.
It’s about understanding what you’re actually getting.

Construction is full of jargon, so we've put together a quick guide to some of the terms you'll hear most when we talk about the outside of your home.

🏠 Lantern: Raised glazed roof.
🏠 Flat roof: Nearly level roof.
🏠 Monopitch roof: Single roof slope.
🏠 Roof window: Window within roof (we're big fans of for these).
🏠 Parapet: Wall above roof edge.
🏠 Sash windows: Traditional vertically-sliding windows.
🏠 Ridge: Highest roof line.
🏠 Dormer: Roof projection with a window.
🏠 Gable: Triangular roof end.
🏠 Gutter: Channel that carries rainwater off the roof.
🏠 Bi-fold doors: Folding doors that open up a wall of glass.
🏠 RWP: Rainwater pipe.

An extension with a view — and some clever privacy planning ✏️

This 1950s detached house in Sale got a two-storey extension to the side and rear, plus a single-storey addition housing an open-plan kitchen, living and dining space — lit by a lantern rooflight and opened up with large bifold doors.

The real challenge was the balcony above: in a built-up area, overlooking neighbouring gardens is a genuine planning concern. We solved it with careful side walls to block sightlines, paired with a clear balustrade and a pergola roof — private where it needs to be, open everywhere else. Finished in render throughout.

Autumn's shaping up to be a busy one for home shows — here's where we're planning to go 🧡

If you're London-based, the Home Building & Renovating Show is at ExCeL from 18–20 September (starting tomorrow!), and Grand Designs Live hits the NEC in Birmingham from 2–4 October — that one's probably the best all-rounder for inspiration and suppliers. Decorex at Olympia (11–14 October) leans more high-end and trade-focused, but it's still full of good ideas if interiors are your thing.

Closer to home for us, the Northern Homebuilding & Renovating Show comes to Harrogate from 30 October to 1 November — easy travel and a strong one for anyone actually planning a project. And if you want to get into the festive spirit, the Ideal Home Show Christmas is on at Olympia from 26–29 November.

If you're prioritising, we'd say Harrogate and Birmingham give the most value — dip into Decorex or the London show if you're keen on the interiors side too.

It starts with a conversation 🧡

Our clients in Urmston knew their Victorian terrace wasn't working for them. The kitchen was cut off from the dining room, whoever was cooking missed out on family life, and when friends came over someone always disappeared to make drinks. They also wanted to be able to keep an eye on the children while cooking.

Like many homeowners, they'd already started thinking about solutions before we met. They had one idea. By the end of Magda's workshop, they had five.

Not because we were trying to make things complicated, but because once you start questioning how a house actually works, there are usually several good answers — some create a bigger kitchen, some improve storage, some cost less to build, some make better use of the garden.

Afterwards, they told us:

"Before Magda came to see us, we only had one idea. After the workshop, we came away with five different options. It completely changed the way we thought about our home."

A simple extension, beautifully crafted 🧱

This single-storey extension to a 1930s semi in the Heatons keeps things refreshingly simple: flat roof, bifold doors, and a lantern rooflight bringing extra light into the kitchen. No unnecessary flourishes — just good brickwork, done properly. Sometimes the quiet extensions are the ones we’re proudest of.
