House clearances can be daunting. Even for us, and I’ve been doing them for over 10 years.
There’s a lot more to it than simply emptying a house. Everything needs sorting through, working out what can be reused, what can go to charity, what’s worth selling and what genuinely needs disposing of.
We always try to do it in the best way possible. We don’t want to throw things away that someone else could use, and we also have to be realistic about what things are actually worth. The second-hand furniture market isn’t great and selling items takes time, which is why a lot of good usable items are better going to charity where they have the space and footfall to sell them.
If you’ve got months to clear a property, my advice would be to do a little bit at a time. Sell what you can, do charity shop runs, tip runs and tackle one thing each day. It soon adds up.
If you’ve only got a few weeks and just need the whole thing taken care of, that’s where we can help.

Just a quick thank you to Charlie, a client we’ve moved so many times now I’ve genuinely lost count! 😂
We’ve been back every six months on the dot for some time now, and it’s always a pleasure. Great lad and a lovely family.

This one will be the last for a while as Charlie is heading down south, but just a massive thank you for coming back to us time and time again. Regular customers mean a lot to us, and we’re always so grateful for the continued support.

House clearances always start with a plan… and somehow end up looking like this 😂
We’ve been doing clearances for 10+ years and every single time we go in with the intention of keeping everything organised. Then reality kicks in.
You’re working against the clock, you have removals booked in and clients to see, emptying each room brings new surprises, sorting things two or three times thinking you can sell it and then thinking it’s to much work for a tenner 😂 and trying to decide what can be reused, donated, sold or genuinely needs disposing of.
And that last bit matters to us.
We could probably get these jobs done a lot quicker if everything just went in the same direction, but I hate seeing perfectly good belongings thrown away.
Around 70% of what we clear ends up going to charity shops, and from this particular clearance we’ve also ended up with half a container full of things that are too good to throw away and could be sold or reused.
The only problem is we’re straight back onto house moves now, so God knows when we’re going to find the time to sort and sell it all 😂 VANTAZIA thanks for your help on this one again.
There is a serious side to it though.
When you clear a house, you’re not just clearing “stuff”. In a lot of cases you’re handling someone’s lifetime of possessions. Things they bought, kept, used and probably had memories attached to for years.
Eventually somebody has to make decisions about what happens to all of it. It’s quite sad when you actually stop and think about it, and I think the least we can do is make sure as much as possible gets another life rather than simply being thrown away.
So yes… it currently looks like absolute carnage. But there is a method to the madness. 😂

Just wanted to do a little post to officially welcome Kaitlyn to Open Removals 👋

Kaitlyn started with us last week, working a few hours each day and helping with everything that goes on behind the scenes.

As Open Removals has got busier over the years, one of the things I’ve struggled with is keeping on top of everything while also being out doing the actual moves. Phone signal is usually terrible, especially when we’re working out in the sticks, and customer contact has always been really important to me.

Every customer needs looking after properly. Surveys need arranging, quotes sending, deposits and invoices sorting, new enquiries chasing up, questions answering and about 100 other little things that come with running the business.

Having Kaitlyn there to help with all of that has honestly been one of the best things we’ve done.

She currently works around running her own pet care business, Kait & The Canines, doing dog walking, pet sitting and other bits around Ashley, Loggerheads and the surrounding areas. She’s someone I’d happily trust with my business and my animals — just a genuinely kind and caring person.

I worked with Kaitlyn’s mum, Caz a good friend of mine, years ago at Ashley House. She was genuinely one of the best support workers I ever worked with and has since gone on to become a nurse, so when I saw Kaitlyn had applied for the job I was pretty happy. I think she’d basically got the job about 10 seconds after applying 😂

She’s only been here a week and has already made a massive difference. I’ve got no doubt she’ll do really well with her own business too.

🫏 WELCOME TO THE DONKEY!
It’s a scary but all-in kind of day.
After 10 years in the business, ducking, diving, learning and being as resourceful as possible, I’ve finally plucked up the courage to buy a decent van and I’m looking to expand the business over the next year.
Anyone in the industry knows it’s full of peaks and troughs, but to be honest, so is life. We only live once, don’t we?
So, with a heavy finance payment hanging over my head every month 😂… welcome everyone to the Donkey!
It’s a big old van and I can’t wait to get it out on tomorrow’s job.
Life’s short, I love my job, so why not give myself the best chance to do it right?
