National Tradesmen Day is an opportunity to recognise the people building their skills and careers across the industry, including the apprentices developing their experience with Thomas Armstrong.

Emily Bailiff is an apprentice in our Timber Division, where she designs roof trusses, floor joists and spandrel panels, as well as assisting with timber frame coordination.

Alongside her role at Thomas Armstrong, Emily is about to begin the fourth year of her Architectural Technology degree at the University of Lancashire, with plans to complete her degree in 2028.

Throughout her apprenticeship, Emily has had opportunities both within the business and at university to develop her technical skills and support her professional development and progression.

Her next goal is to progress into timber frame design, continuing to broaden her technical knowledge and contribute to the future growth of Thomas Armstrong Timber.

We’re pleased to support Emily as she continues to develop her skills and work towards the next stage of her career.

🎉 Celebrating 20 Years with Thomas Armstrong Construction!

This September, we’re celebrating Dean Fisher, who has reached an incredible 20-year milestone with Thomas Armstrong Construction. 👏

Dean started his journey with us as an Apprentice Joiner, working on the Multi-Storey Car Park in Workington Town Centre. Two decades later, he’s still part of our construction team, building on his skills and experience across a wide range of projects.

When asked about his favourite part of working at Thomas Armstrong, Dean said it’s been meeting fellow members of the workforce and building friendships along the way.

One of his career highlights has been working on new development projects and delivering a high-quality finish for our customers.

And his advice for anyone starting out in construction?
💬 “Listen and keep asking questions.”

Congratulations on 20 years, Dean! Thank you for your hard work, commitment and contribution to Thomas Armstrong Construction. Here’s to many more! 👏

For National Tradesmen Day, we’re recognising the apprentices gaining valuable experience across Thomas Armstrong Group.

Brodie Richardson is a trainee quantity surveyor within our construction department and is now in his fourth year at Thomas Armstrong, alongside the fourth year of his quantity surveying degree.

Over the course of his apprenticeship, Brodie has worked across a variety of commercial and residential projects. His experience so far includes the Gaming Hub, Langdale Roofing Project, Westfield Housing Project and Ashfield School Project. He is currently working on the Kells School Project, Inglewood School Project and the voids project.

He has also assisted with larger-scale projects, including Centre Parcs, High Wray, Wigton 60 Dwellings and Woodhouse 40 Dwellings.

Looking ahead, Brodie’s aim is to complete his degree and become a fully qualified quantity surveyor before working towards becoming RICS chartered. He also wants to take on more complex projects and continue building his experience and knowledge.

National Tradesmen Day is a chance to recognise the people learning, progressing and building their careers across the industry, and Brodie is one of the apprentices doing just that at Thomas Armstrong.

We’d like to wish Jimmy Scott a very happy retirement following his final day with Thomas Armstrong Group on Thursday, 10th September.

Jimmy joined Thomas Armstrong Aggregates in 1995, following the acquisition of Peter Greggains Ltd. As a Senior Loading Shovel Operator, he worked at Overby Quarry, loading trucks and feeding the sand and gravel wash plant.

Over the years, Jimmy has been an important part of the team, bringing his knowledge and experience to the grading of sand and aggregates to meet the specifications required across the building industry.

Thank you, Jimmy, for all your hard work and commitment over the years. We wish you a long and healthy retirement.

Our Foamed Glass UK team have recently completed a project at Welborne Garden Village.

Foamed Glass FG40 Lightweight Aggregate was combined with Cellweb® Cellular Confinement to create a lightweight load-compensation solution over a high-pressure gas main.

The ultra-lightweight material meant walking-floor vehicles could transport up to 4–5 times more material per load, helping reduce vehicle movements, haulage costs and transport-related emissions. 🚛♻️

The same approach can also support tree root protection, helping reduce ground pressure while creating stable access routes and working platforms. 🌳

We're back at Whinfell Forest!

With last year’s Project Autumn now complete, we’re moving onto the next phase of the Center Parcs project at Whinfell Forest Holiday Village.

Thomas Armstrong Construction started work on the latest phase of the Autumn Lodge Refurbishment Programme on 1 September 2026. The project will include the refurbishment and remodelling of 112 lodges across 13 clusters, alongside improvements to the electrical infrastructure.

We’re pleased to continue working with Center Parcs UK and look forward to delivering the next phase of works at Whinfell Forest.

We’d like to wish John McCracken a very happy retirement following his last day on 28th August 2026.

John started with Thomas Armstrong Construction on 29th January 1986, working as both a Ganger and Telehandler Driver across our project sites over the past 40 years. Having accumulated a vast amount of knowledge and practical experience, it’s fair to say he has forgotten more about construction than most people will ever learn.

He isn't hanging up his boots entirely just yet, John will still be stepping in to cover holidays for us, while spending the rest of his well-earned time on his allotment.

Thank you for all your hard work over the years, John, and all the best for your retirement!
