Have you seen Madfabulous? If you haven't, it's worth knowing: it's the story of the 5th Marquess of Anglesey - one of the most extraordinary figures in Welsh history.

His family owned this land. Cartrefle was built here in the 1870s, just along the Menai Strait from where his story unfolded.

This week, officially lifted its decades-long ban on the garden gnome at the Chelsea Flower Show. At Cartrefle, we quietly note the vindication of our original owner, Sir Charles Edmund Isham.

Widely credited with introducing the first terracotta gnomes to Britain in 1847, Isham recognized the unique microclimate of the Menai Strait. Here, he planted our exotic arboretum, where his legendary figures kept watch.

This landscape eventually absorbed Cartrefle-an Arts and Crafts sanctuary historically tied to the 4th Marquess of Anglesey, whose family's flamboyant legacy is currently unfolding in British cinemas with the release of by

Sir Isham built Cartrefle in 1876 as his Welsh retreat. He’s also the man credited with introducing garden gnomes to Britain from Germany. His master bedroom is still here — freestanding copper bath, panoramic views over both bridges and the Eryri mountain range beyond. One of seven individually designed rooms, each with its own story.
