September weekend is my favourite weekend of the Millport Calendar. I love the fireworks, the street entertainment, the sandcastle competition...it's just the best isn't it?
I'd decided for my window display to attempt to depict another time honoured tradition in the Boyle family holidays for quite a few years- The Late Great Mr Millport Breaks stoically pulling the orange dingy .
Our three children loved this event. I don't recall where the dingy came from: a spur of the moment purchase I think maybe from Mapes, but all three children would hop in, and Mr Millport would haul them around. I sat on a nearby bench occasionally calling encouraging things:
" Woops! Jack's nearly fallen in! Careful ! Yes, you're going very deep uh huh!" then returning to reading my book and thinking about what I'd get from the Ritz later on. It was blissful, I can tell you. For me, anyway....
This touching little scene was recreated in my window with cardboard box houses, showing Beside the Bay at Kames Bay, air drying clay people and boat, and blue and green cellophane sea.
The sea was trickier than expected. I'd not brought enough glue sticks with me , and so it was hard to stop it springing up, giving the alarming impression that Mr Millport was hauling the dingy through a veritable tsunami of surf. Indeed his wee air-drying clay legs kept becoming obscured by cellophane and it was almost over his head.
The tiny lights were hard to fix into place in the cardboard houses, too.
Grumbling a bit that this was not how I had envisioned it looking, I set out with my collection bucket and Hi Vis Vest to collect cash for September Weekend 2027, and was soon cheered by the Pebbles Cafe and Garrison House Café street entertainment which made me laugh so hard I nearly dropped my bucket.
Thank you to everyone who donated, who stopped to look at my display of Mr Millport Breaks being slowly swallowed by a sea of cellophane, who oohed and ahhed at the amazing fireworks, thanks to everyone who gives up time and trouble to organise all the fantastic events.
It makes this special weekend even more special.

Miss Millport Breaks and her delightful wife Jordyn accompanied me to the island today. We wanted to drop some bits and bobs for my ( ahem ) award winning 🤞 September weekend window display, but also to join in and show support for Millport's very first Pride LBTG+ March . There was a great turn out for the march despite some rather mixed weather, from Kames Bay down to the pier, although we popped into Pebbles on the way down , to get some lunch, as the girls were definitely keen to try Pebbles vegan/ vegetarian menu!
We'd already had coffee on arrival at the Garrison, because, you know, I like to spread myself around a bit.
I'm so lucky to have such adorable daughters in law. Obviously my children have excellent taste in spouses. 🌈

Fireworks can be really distressing for pets, can't they. Even though Twigz the cat is very ancient and should frankly know better, he insisted on getting outside last year on Guy Fawkes night and was so frightened by a loud bang that he shot through my neighbour's cat flap and hid there overnight ( much to my concern).
Anyway, what I intended this post for, was to point out that Millport is largely a firework free zone on November 5th. There's no organised display, as September weekend is traditionally when the display takes place.
This year, I have the days leading up to the 5th,and 5th November itself available to book, if your pup is not a fan of loud bangs and pops. ( I have a booking from 6th ).
Settle down in front of the log burner with the dog on the rug, and enjoy the peace and quiet! Two nights £150, three £210.

As regular readers will know Miss Millport Breaks is a very kind and thoughtful person . This was never more evident when she arrived at my house for pizza last week with a gift for me.
She's been taking stained glass classes, and this term she's made the most beautiful panel depicting our very own Crocodile Rock. ( She insists she had some help from her tutor.but I think she's just being modest!)
I've put it in my kitchen window. Every time I look at it I smile and that's got to be worth it's weight in gold hasn't it?

Daisy Dog and her lovely owner stayed in Beside the Bay last week. The weather was a bit mixed, but Daisy didn't let that hold her back! She swam, she gamboled about , she had a puppucino in the Garrison.....She only looks a * little* like Count Dracula in her towel cape doesn't she?

I was really heartened to read on one of the community pages that a couple of local men, Davie Stevenson and Andrew Caldwell, have cleared the pathway to Farland Point. It had become almost impossible to walk due to the undergrowth on either side of the path. As it's one of my favourite walks from Beside the Bay , I'm delighted that the two gave up time and energy to do this voluntarily!
Do keep walking it if you're staying: it's a great flat walk with lovely views , taking around fifty minutes from the door and back again. The more it's used, the more the undergrowth will stay...under, I guess and not become overgrowth.
(Is this a word, I find myself pondering. 🤔 Maybe I just invented it? )

On Tuesday it was - quelle suprise!- hot and sunny in Millport.
I woke up at around six pm, which is always annoying. I get up during term time at six am but this is the holidays! Brain, please take note....
Anyway I hopped out of bed and after a quick cup of tea, I set off for the top of the island before it got too hot.
On the way, I took a little detour via Gouklan Wood , off Ferry Road. There's a lovely little walk through dappled woodland past Cumbrae's very own standing stone.
It's not as impressive as Callanais Stones( which I have been lucky enough to visit too this summer), but it's still got a certain presence to it, standing quietly in the middle of the woods.
I breathed in quiet and moss smells .
Then back out onto Ferry Road and up to the top of the island. It was so quiet. I said hello to the coos, but I didn't see another soul.
I love the Glaidstone. It's the best view, across to Arran, round to Largs , and I love to watch the little boats scudding across the water.
When I walked down, I headed straight for the Garrison House Café cafe for breakfast which was , because I'm a creature of habit, a roll and square sausage and an Americano with hot oat milk.
What could be better?
The only cafe I didn't manage to fit in during my stay was Pebbles Cafe cafe, so I'll have to rectify that on my next visit!

***Booked thank you. ***Last call for a little August three night break! Roll up, roll up for three nights in the compact but charming Beside the Bay apartment , a ground floor one bedroom flat , where dogs are welcomed They don't even need to be well behaved. They can be as naughty as you like , charging into the waves at Kames Bay across the road with a stolen sausage from the Cumbrae Butcher.... It's fine.
The flat sleeps two people as a couple, no space for any children, which gives you the excuse to leave the little blighters with Granny.
Dates are these, and ONLY these , I'm afraid. It's my last break available so get in fast!

I've had a lovely day visit to the island today.
Miss Millport Breaks collected her aged mama( me) at half past eight, and we drove down in the windy sunshine to catch the 10am ferry. Despite the queue and a little confusion over the* end* of the queue, from the vehicle behind us( Miss Millport Breaks fixed him with her best steely stare and gestured to tuck in at our back), we got on the ten am one comfortably.
First things first on arrival! Breakfast!
Despite the Garrison being our usual port of call, I suggested Pebbles Cafe cafe for a little change, and Miss MB enthusiastically ordered the bagel, two fried eggs and bacon with some cheese. I opted for square sausage and hash browns on a morning roll.
Sumptuous! All served quickly and with a smile from staff.
Then up to Beside the Bay we strolled to load up the car with some things to bring home, drop off some jam, and do my safety checks. Then we bagged up the wood for the stove, and went for a little stroll around Kames Bay.
There was a little family of geese. Well, I think they were geese, but if anyone knows better, they're welcome to tell me differently, as they may have been ducks for all I know. Anyway, they had three or four babies and were parading around the sands, obviously out for a morning stroll. Despite a dog showing some interest, and a bit of noisy splashing from the indignant Papa Goose/ Duck, they seemed to enjoy their walk, and we enjoyed watching them.
Then home to unpack the car.
What good daughter Miss MB is. And what a beautiful day! The Arran mountains looked so lovely, and you could see the Sleeping Warrior in all his glory, very clearly today.
