Planning your exit strategy in advance is crucial to overcome this and have clarity on where everything will go.

I go through this checklist:

1️⃣ Is it in good enough condition and worth my time selling? (I rarely bother for less than £15, my time is worth more)

2️⃣ Can I pass it on to family or friends? Always checked first, don't just dump it on them.

3️⃣ Is it in a saleable condition for charity? (Don't give charity shops items they can sell as it costs them to dispose)

Some charities will accept bags marked 'rags' but always check first.

If getting to the charity shop is a problem or barrier, book www.anglodoorstopcollections.co.uk

4️⃣ Is it recyclable? Check out www.recyclenow.com

5️⃣ Can I use it for anything else?

6️⃣ If nothing above works, it's time to accept it needs to go in the bin. Holding onto it won't change that, so let it go.

Don't let feeling bad about binning items stop you declutter, instead use the knowledge to be mindful about what you're bringing into your home.

As we edge closer to the festive season, now’s the perfect time to start a few gentle home resets, nothing big or overwhelming.

🧸 If you’ve got kids, try involving them in short toy sorts while it's still calm. Chat about what's broken, they’ve outgrown or no longer play with before the new gifts arrive. It's a lovely way to reflect on what they’ve enjoyed this year.

☕️ For the adults, pick one easy win for yourself each week - maybe the bathroom shelf, the mug cupboard, or a surface in your bedroom. Small areas, quick results, instant calm.

🛏 If you have guests staying over the holidays, tackle a few of those little prep jobs now - clear a drawer, make space in the wardrobe or take those charity bags that you hid in there to the charity shop! Your future self will thank you.

CAUTION: Lie-ins are bad for you 😂

Anyone else? 🙈 😭

I might be a professional organiser, but it doesn't stop these things from happening in my house, too! But, I am so grateful we don't have the volume of toys we used to have since we decluttered, so tidying up is much quicker.

And, simple systems mean there are no excuses for my kids not to do the clear up (though sometimes a bit of bribery is needed).
