Do landlords have a future? The fate of buy-to-let in charts

Landlords have historically elicited little public sympathy and their concerns about new rules in the rental market and tax rises have gone largely ignored.

To make matters worse, a string of changes to the buy-to-let market โ€” tighter regulations, higher costs, tax changes and more rights for tenants โ€” mean that for many landlords the sums no longer add up. A third of them now make less than ยฃ10,000 a year from their portfolio, and they are acting accordingly.

Rents have skyrocketed as the availability of properties has failed to keep up with demand, partly because landlords are selling up. According to Rightmove, the property website, rental properties now get an average of 12 inquiries, up from five in early 2019
