In case you missed it…

Last Friday, we brought together colleagues, partners, supporters and friends to launch Here For Good, our new five-year strategy for YMCA South Midlands.

As our CEO, Simon Green, shared:

“Here for Good is about building on everything we have learned over many years of working alongside young people and looking confidently towards what comes next.

“Our ambitions are significant, but they are rooted in what young people are telling us they need: safe and affordable homes, access to education and employment, the right support and the opportunity to have their voices heard.”

This is our ambition for the next five years, and we’re excited to take our community on that journey with us.

What a fantastic day at the Amazing Northampton Run

A huge thank you to all of our incredible runners, including Claudia Beasley, Dominic Horn, Patricia Mafolo, and Allan Blackburn, who took on the challenge in support of YMCA South Midlands. We’re so grateful that you chose to run for us and help support our work with young people across our communities.

Thank you to our team at Derngate House for showing their support, and to everyone who came along to cheer our runners on. We also got a chance to meet the current Mayor of Northampton, Councillor Mike Hallam.

It was an exciting day, and we were delighted to be part of such a brilliant event in Northampton.

Through our Mental Wealth project in partnership with Makewell, we’re seeing meaningful change in our Milton Keynes campus.

Our positive move-on rate has increased to 89% in the last year, while ambulance call-outs have fallen by 50.8% and hospital visits by 67.4%.

These figures represent fewer moments of crisis, greater stability, and more young people being supported to move forward.

A wonderful weekend celebrating MK Pride!

Thank you, MK Pride Festival, for inviting YMCA South Midlands to be part of this year’s celebrations. It was a pleasure to meet so many supporters from across our community and to welcome everyone who stopped by our stall.

A special thank you to our residents who helped run the stall with such enthusiasm and made the day even more memorable.

At YMCA South Midlands, we’re proud to stand with the LGBTQ+ community and believe that everyone deserves to feel safe, valued, and respected.

Thank you to everyone who celebrated with us. We look forward to joining you again next year.

Have you listened to Episode 1 of The Y yet?

In our first episode, host Nicky speaks with Emma, one of our Personal Development Coaches, about belonging and why it matters so much for young people.

Emma reflects on how people searching for belonging can sometimes find it in positive or negative places, often without consciously choosing one over the other.

That’s why creating a safe, supportive environment matters. At YMCA South Midlands, we want young people to feel accepted, build positive relationships, and have the support they need to thrive.

KICKBACK KITCHEN

Just good food for all

Kickback Kitchen is a local evening meal service for everyone, designed to fit around busy lives and take the pressure off. An amazing initiative that gives everyone an opportunity to take home and enjoy a hot meal, no matter what their circumstances.

Proper, tasty, ready-to-reheat meals for everyone.

Every Thursday between 3 PM and 5 PM, you can pick up your ready-to-reheat meal straight from HomeGround Café. Just swing by, grab your dinner, and head home knowing one thing in your day is already sorted. We’ll then let you know how much it costs to make, and you chip in what you can.

Too many people across Milton Keynes are still living with housing insecurity, and for young people, that instability can affect their wellbeing, employment and ability to plan for the future.

At YMCA South Midlands, we’re working to change that. We provide young people with safe accommodation, practical guidance and ongoing support, helping them build confidence, gain independence and feel part of a community.

For Alex, that meant working closely with his Complex Needs Worker, accessing 1:1 psychological support through our Mental Wealth project in partnership with Make Well, and taking part in employability courses to prepare for work.

Ending homelessness also means creating an environment where young people have the stability, support, and opportunities they need to belong, contribute, and thrive.

Over the last 12 months, YMCA South Midlands has delivered 342 activity sessions, with 157 residents getting involved.

These sessions include weekly walks, gym sessions, and running clubs, as well as football, bike rides, bowling, crazy golf, and days out. Our activities give residents plenty of ways to get moving, connect with others, and simply enjoy themselves.

Physical activity is an important part of the wellbeing support we provide. It can help build healthy routines, confidence, and friendships, while giving residents opportunities to try something new.

It was great to partner with MK Dons Community Trust to give more than 100 young people aged 5–12 a place to enjoy their summer, with everything from sports and physical activities to arts and crafts and mentoring.

At a time when youth services across England have faced significant cuts, opportunities for young people to come together, make friends, try something new and simply enjoy being themselves really matter.

It was incredibly rewarding to see so many young people get involved, and we’re already looking forward to doing it all again next year!
