I had a great day in Glasgow today. I went to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum (free admission, free guided tours) and did some shopping, had amazing coffee at Laboratorio Espresso and rode on the subway. While it is only an hours drive to Glasgow from The Bothy, Auchencastle, parking near Kelvingrove can be expensive so I would definitely recommend using the subway to get around the city. Alternatively, ditch the car completely - the X74 bus from Beattock or Moffat takes you into Buchanan bus station, next to the Buchanan Galleries shopping centre and subway station. Keep an eye on the Stagecoach website and Moffat Community Support page for updates about delays / cancellations to the bus, they do sometimes happen.
Other places to visit in Glasgow include The Burrell Collection, House for an Art Lover Tantrum Doughnuts and the Barras Market.

Autumn at The Bothy, Auchencastle is a beautiful, relaxing time of year. I love smelling the smoke from the Bothy chimney. I know the guests are really making themselves at home, relaxing in front of the wood-burning stove.
One of my favourite walks is the loop around Auchen Castle Hotel, including the tranquil lake. In the last few weeks, Suzy, Radley and I have seen so many mushrooms! All sorts of colours and sizes.
The Bothy has a subscription to D&G Life magazine. This is full of ideas of places to visit, across the county, including distilleries, galleries, shops, restaurants, historical sites and so much more. The magazines are on the table beside the fireplace.

If Michelin gave stars for hot chocolate, Campbells Confections would be a 3 star! (You know I only went in to research this location for The Bothy, Auchencastle guests don’t you? My top priority each day is researching how you can all have the perfect relaxing break!)
Anyway, Stephen & Jane use top quality dark chocolate to make their fantastic hot chocolate, so it is rich, chocolatey and not too sweet - perfect!
Stephen is so passionate about making chocolate. He was telling us yesterday all about the 2026 advent calendars. He will soon be starting to hand-make the hundreds of chocolates required to fill the calendars. There is a waiting list if you want to give your name, as they have sold out in previous years.
Campbell’s Confections is on Moffat High Street, with free parking at the door.

Glasgow is just over an hour from The Bothy, Auchencastle. It has free galleries and museums, the cutest subway that takes you from car-parking / the bus station to shops to museums to parks, so useful. But non-locals might find the local dialect a wee bit difficult. So here is a helpful educational film:

The beautiful Talla reservoir is 11 miles from The Bothy, Auchencastle. The design and construction are awe-inspiring.

30 years ago our parents Claudio and Florence lived out their dream of owning and running their own family run Italian restaurant. An adventure that found them moving from Dumfries to Moffat.

On this night 30 years ago they opened the doors to “Claudios restaurant”

Myself and Davide are forever thankful for the continued custom and support from our wonderful customers and also to the numerous staff members that have worked within our team, we couldn’t have done it without you🥰
