Lunch break whilst supporting ecological project in Northumberland. Sat under an Oak tree, but what species of Oak?

There are many in the UK with the Sessile Oaks and the Pendunculate Oaks most frequently occurring.

The sessile oak (Quercus petraea) and the pedunculate oak (Quercus robur) are two closely related species of oak native to Europe, and they can be tricky to tell apart. However, they differ in a few key botanical.

Here’s one way to tell the difference.

Leaf Stalks and Shape l 🍃:

Sessile oak:
Leaves have longer stalks (petioles) — 1–2 cm.
Leaf base is usually more tapered.
Lobes are more evenly spaced and regular.

Pedunculate oak:
Leaves have very short or no stalks
Leaf base is distinctly lobed or ear-shaped
Lobes can appear more irregular.
