A comment in a customer's report: "The final layer of block paving should be removed, and an ACO strip drain should be installed across the garage opening, connecting to the nearby rainwater downpipe gulley. At a minimum, the block paving at the shoulders should be replaced with an aggregate soakaway to effectively manage surface water and prevent rainwater from splashing onto the masonry above the unacceptably low damp proof course (DPC) and the paving laid to falls to prevent pooling at the garage opening".

Developers' response: "The block paving will soak away the surface water, it won't pool, and we will not install an ACO. The DPC is fine".

Customer message after it rained: "The developer has decided to install an ACO drain, address the gradient and add to the DPC (chemically) out of goodwill.

Has your snag inspector considered surface water problems? Northern Survey... were different.

Roofers! 'Ere me now! Rafter trays go in the eaves to meet the 3-in-1. If they are more than 100mm above the loft space insulation, they are probably in the wrong place...and rockwool doesn't belong in the eaves. Try one of our Cold House/Damp House inspections to resolve the madness of roofing contractors and make your home toasty and comfortable.

Nothing gives us more pleasure than to give a house a clean bill of health. A survey at Great Park, Newcastle upon Tyne, last week returned the lowest number of defects and snags to a 5-bed property in our inspection history. A shout-out to for a job well done, and to their brick doctor for a superb repair to a damaged brick. Small things matter with aesthetics.

If your snagging team lacks accredited surveyors, your inspection report is likely missing vital information. One of our customers experienced ongoing issues with cold and ineffective heating after two attempts to resolve the problem. Once they contacted Northern Survey, our RICS-accredited surveyor, David, identified the root cause in just one hour: serious Part L defects at the eaves, a complete absence of a fire sock, and inadequate compartmentalisation—a clear fire hazard. Don’t settle for less; if you’re going to snag your property, partner with a company that has RICS or RPSA surveyors on its team.
