Built between 1876 and 1878 at a cost of £30,000, the ironwork for Amstrong Bridge was designed and manufactured at Armstrong’s Elswick works on the River Tyne. Because the bridge spans a wide valley which had in parts been previously been mined for coal, it was engineered with a unique system of rocker and sliding bearings. This allowed the structure to thermally expand, contract, and self-adjust if the ground moved, making it the first bridge in the world with this capability. Initially used by pedestrians, horses, and carriages, it eventually accommodated motor vehicles. However, rising traffic weights led to it's ultimate closure to cars in 1963. Today it provides an important route for walkers and cyclists, and is also home to hugely popular craft and food markets.
