Being here in Sri Lanka has shifted my perspective more than I expected.

The pace of life is different. The priorities feel different. It’s a reminder that growth isn’t just about speed or scale — it’s about impact, stability and what really matters.

Travel has a way of humbling you. It makes you appreciate what you have, and question what you’re chasing.

Grateful for the opportunity to experience both worlds — and for the lessons that come with it.

A New Lease of Life for this Former Hotel 🏨 🏡

For years, the once-grand Diamond Jubilee Hotel in Tylorstown has stood silent — its towering façade a fading echo of the Victorian era. Locals passing the site on the main roundabout at the southern end of the village have long wondered what fate would befall the striking but neglected building.

Now, a new planning application could finally answer that question. Proposals have been submitted to transform the old hotel into 12 modern flats, breathing new life into one of the Rhondda’s most recognisable landmarks.

Although the building isn’t officially listed, council planners have acknowledged its distinctive local character and cultural significance to residents.

A design and access statement accompanying the plan says the conversion would “revive a landmark” that has sat empty for years — while preventing further decay that threatens its structure.

According to a structural engineer’s report, the building remains sound and robust, sparking renewed hope that restoration — not demolition — will preserve a piece of Tylorstown’s heritage.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has previously expressed support for repair and retention wherever possible, a stance echoed by locals keen to see the hotel’s familiar outline light up once more.

For now, the community waits — hopeful that this long-dormant chapter of Tylorstown’s history might at last be reopened.
