High above Rostrevor, nestled in the Mourne Mountains, there lies a massive stone, resting quiet and still, as if it had always belonged there.

But it wasn’t nature alone that placed it.

Long ago, in the time when giants walked the land, Fionn mac Cumhaill, the great warrior and leader of the Fianna, was hunting a wild boar through the valleys and slopes of the Cooley Mountains.

After the chase, he built a fire and cooked his prize atop a long-dormant volcano.

But his rest didn’t last.

Out of the mist came Ruscaire, the Giant of Snow and Ice — taller than the trees, armed with sword, club, and shield.

He called out his challenge, declaring himself the master of Ulster.

Fionn stood, unshaken.

"You may think you’ve conquered me," he said, "but I will rise again — and the whole of nature will rejoice."

And so began a battle that shook the land.

For days, they fought.

First with blades, then with clubs.

On the third night, Ruscaire crept into the shadows and stole Fionn’s sword.

But even then, he spared his sleeping rival — for even giants, it seems, had honour.

When Fionn awoke and found his sword gone, his fury was unmatched.

He tore boulders from the earth and launched them across Carlingford Lough toward Ruscaire, igniting a storm of stone and rage.

And then — he found it.

A colossal stone, nearly 50 tonnes in weight, lying at his feet.

Summoning the last of his giant strength, Fionn lifted the Cloughmore Stone and hurled it with every ounce of might.

It struck true.

Ruscaire was crushed beneath the weight, his body swallowed by the land, melting away like snow in spring.

Exhausted, Fionn lay down — his head resting on the Cooley Mountains, his feet trailing into the sea.

And there he remained, his body turning to stone with time.

They say you can still see his outline in the mountains today (can you see him?)

The Cloughmor still rests where it landed — a silent witness to a battle of giants.

You can hike to it from Kilbroney Park in Rostrevor.

And when you do, take a moment to look out across the lough and remember: you're standing where legends once lived - more in the comments 👇 👇 👇
