You know Betty. She runs quality control at Mowatt. Mostly this means lying on the desk and giving us the side-eye when something isn't right.

Yesterday she helped us personalise the For Sale board at 21C Westgate. Top floor flat, 3 bed, sea views, single garage, dedicated parking space, shared garden. Betty supervised from the desk, as she does.

We try to enjoy ourselves at work. We own the business, so we can adapt, be creative, and do things our own way. The board is one of the first things a buyer sees though, so every line on it has to be right. Sea views means sea views. Parking means parking. Our clients trust us with the biggest thing they own and we take the small details as seriously as the big ones.

Betty makes us double-check. We keep the boards accurate.

'Long on qualifications and children. Short on relevant work experience.' That is how one interviewer took it upon himself to sum me up a couple of years ago. All because I had not worked in his specific industry. Clearly he had not heard of transferable skills.

Before children my career was in management consultancy, focused on corporate learning and development, and I got there by teaching in secondary schools first. I know people, I know how to communicate, and I am organised. None of that disappeared when I had a family. I worked as a headmaster's secretary, ran a CIPD training centre, worked in estate agency, and worked for an online retailer. I have also bought, renovated and sold many homes of my own, which is the closest thing to living the buyer and seller journey from the inside.

Covid let me chase something of my own, so I did a masters in creative writing and came out with a distinction. (Because.. why not?!)

I built the systems, the website, the socials, the branding and all the marketing and communications behind Mowatt. Phil brings the commercial instinct, I bring the detail, and together we decided to flip estate agency on its head, starting with the buyer and reverse engineering everything from there.

Two people. One promise.

Every agency has a story. Ours starts with two people who did not want to do this the usual way.

Phil is the commercial half of Mowatt. He founded Tie Club off the back of touring factories across China, built it into a business shipping half a million ties a year across Europe through the RBS Entrepreneurship scheme, then exited by negotiating a buyout with William Turner. From there into property, buying and refurbishing homes with his own capital, and on into estate agency as an appraisal expert. He knows what a home is worth and he knows how to hold a line when it matters.

Always entrepreneurial, he had long dreamed of running his own agency. He just knew exactly who he wanted beside him.

An interviewer took it upon himself to sum me up in one line. For a part-time admin job, no less. So I stopped applying.

Many years in management consultancy, corporate training and property came before that line was ever said. Phil and I built Mowatt together, a two-person estate agency in East Lothian and Edinburgh. He brings the commercial instinct. I built the systems, the brand and the marketing that run behind it.
