If our panel, featuring Alva Gotby and Adam Almeida, showed anything, it’s that as renters we stand at a crossroads. Whilst the Renters’ Rights Act (due to come into force on 1st May next year) takes a significant step towards housing security by scrapping no-fault evictions, the threats posed by rising rents, poor quality homes and a lack of social housing means that our fight is far from over.

“What stood out for me was learning just how much big financial interests are embroiled in the bare necessities of our lives. Our houses and things that should be our fundamental rights are basically speculative assets for others.”

However, we should also take a moment to celebrate. The Renters’ Rights Act wasn’t just handed to us on a platter - it is the result of a movement built around shared struggle in private rental housing, organised up and down the UK. The very fact that this bill passed is a testament to the fact that if we organise, we can stare down private finance and the landlord lobby and win. That means that we can win rent caps, we can win more social homes and we can win safe and affordable housing for all. The fightback has only just begun.
