What does your architect do when she’s away? Still working, just with a camera instead of a 'drawing board'.

Studying how façades open and close to the sun, how a line of shutters can choreograph light and privacy. Watching reflections run the length of a simple gabled hall, turning a café into a quiet mirrored landscape. Tracing shadows on stone and chequerboard floors, learning how daylight can give even the smallest room a sense of drama and calm.

Photography becomes a sketchbook: a way to record not only the details and construction solutions, but the feeling of each space, its light, weight and rhythm. All this quiet research stretches far beyond any architectural degree, and feeds back into new projects so they sit more gently in their context, old or new.

It is fascination. It is dedication. It is a love of finding the solution that truly serves the building, and the people who use it.

Enjoying working on the conservation project at St Simon & St Jude in Norwich. It’s great to be collaborating with the Norwich Historic Churches Trust, along with support from Historic England, on such an important Grade I listed building.

There’s a lot to learn from this site, and it’s a privilege to help preserve its history. More updates to come as the project progresses!

The image below was generated using AI and offers a visualisation of how the house might look once the works are completed. While the rendering provides a helpful preview, it is worth noting that such images are indicative. The final result will depend on expert craftsmanship, the preservation of historic fabric, and compliance with conservation guidelines.

Looking forward to sharing updates as works progress and to seeing the property’s historic character revived for the future.

Thrilled to share some good news from Hill Farm in Topcroft!
We’ve just received listed building consent for our clients’ beautiful Grade II listed farmhouse, a timber-framed building dating back to the early 17th century. This means we can begin carefully restoring the historic home, make it more energy-efficient, and improve its setting by removing outdated additions.
Projects like this are at the heart of what we love, helping owners protect Norfolk’s architectural heritage while adapting homes for a bright, sustainable future.
If you have a historic property and are interested in discussing conservation or sensitive upgrades, let’s chat!

We are really looking forward to catching up with you this Thursday at The White Horse, Trowse.

There will be a good mix of members form both EARTHA and SPAB attending, along with interest from a few non-members also, which is always encouraging! If you know of anyone who may be interested, please invite them too!

We will be gathering around 5.30pm onwards, and feel free to come and go whenever is convenient for you.

For those who would like food, the pub has a very reasonably priced Curry Night which will cater between 5pm and 8pm, so if you do want to arrive a bit earlier to make the most of that, please do.

It would be really great if you could RSVP by email - [email protected], or leave a comment just so we have a rough guide of numbers for the pub, and if you need any further information please do not hesitate to get hold of us!

Any updates will be available here: https://eartha.org.uk/news-events/ and on our social media.

Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Past, Present, Future
Today I begin work at the historic Church of St Simon and St Jude in Norwich – a Grade I listed landmark with centuries of stories. This project is about more than preservation; it’s about connection, creativity, and keeping heritage alive for future generations.
