If you’re not attending campus for lectures or seminars, take advantage of studying at home.

Bear in mind that before coronavirus many students chose and benefited from distance learning, and while you might be used to attending lectures and seminars, there are plenty of positives to studying from home.

You can study at your own pace – while you’ll still have deadlines to meet, online learning usually gives you more of a chance to work at your own speed.

Flexible hours – on campus lectures and seminars are often scheduled at specific times. Studying at home is more flexible. Perhaps, you’re more productive in the mornings or work better in the afternoons.

Fewer distractions from other students – virtual lectures mean you’ll probably be more attentive without the distraction of sitting next to a friend.

The facilities are your own – studying at home means you don’t have to fight for a computer in the library. As the majority of facilities are closed, a lot of the material will be online so there’s no need to worry about the textbook you need, being out on loan.

You’ll save money – being homebound means you’ll save cash on takeaway coffees, on-campus lunches and after lecture drinks. If you use public transport to get to and from campus, you’ll save here too.

Listen to music whilst you study.

While some experts argue the ability to concentrate during silence or studying whilst listening to music is entirely up to personal preference.

Many agree that playing certain types of music, such as “obscure 18th century composers,” can help students engage parts of their brain that help them pay attention. Not to mention, listening to music may improve your mood and change your whole outlook about studying in general.

When facing exams, make sure to stay positive and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

There is almost no point going into an exam so nervous you end up making multiple silly errors and then flunking. It’s good to be a little nervous, that’s normal. That just means you’re human. However, if it starts to severely hamper your performance, then it may be time to start putting some work into relaxing. Take deep breaths, drink water and remember, the most you can ever do is your best.

While staying up late is inevitable, try and maintain a healthy lifestyle and get some sleep as well. Make sure you get proper sleep the day before you may have to pull an all-nighter. A healthy mind goes a long way to ensuring good grades. Stay positive!

Fancy taking a break with your studies. You should aim to reward yourself for meeting deadlines and submitting assignments.

These rewards should be only for accomplishing something substantial. Perhaps you intended to finish a larger chapter of a learning module. Upon finishing, give yourself a pre-set present. Maybe a game of FIFA or two, an episode on Netflix or something of the like. But remember, only when you’ve finished something substantial.

As it’s now creeping into the Winter months, it’s easy to fall into the trap of studying in bed.

We know it’s so tempting, you’re so sleepy and tired and it’s cold and dark outside. You think to yourself, “I’ll lie down on my bed and study”, next thing you know, you’re waking up the next day. Don’t ever use your bed to study, chances are you’ll almost definitely fall asleep.

Use your desk space to be more productive and sit upright to stimulate your flow of learning.

As the way you study is changing during the coronavirus pandemic, it’s time for you to keep on top of your learning.

Take good notes during the lecture(s).

While this may seem like an obvious point, pay attention during the lecture and take down good, organised notes. Start a new page, or document if you’re using a laptop for every new lecture. Grab key words and concepts that the lecturer mentions (you won’t have time to copy down full sentences). Then, when class is over, expand on the notes you took down, giving you a second run-through of the same lecture.
