The floral fabric is repeated across the curved headboard, armchair and curtains, bringing a gentle continuity to the room without making everything feel too matched.

At the far end, the deep window seat frames the garden through narrow leaded panes. Above, the long exposed timber beam follows the uneven line of the ceiling rather than being hidden away.

Warm plaster walls, panelled doors and simple timber furniture finish the room quietly, allowing the character of the house to remain the strongest feature. 🪟

A bathroom with plenty of character at Ridlington 🛁

The patterned floral wallpaper brings colour and warmth into the room, following the changing angles beneath the eaves and making a feature of the smaller space.

Running straight through the room, the exposed timber beam anchors the design. Its age and texture sit comfortably alongside the clean glazed shower, simple tiles, natural floorboards and dark timber washstand.

A good example of how an historic home can be made practical for modern life without losing the features that make it interesting. 🌿

Old buildings do not come with standard answers.

Walls move. Timbers settle. Materials weather. Previous repairs leave clues. What looks simple on the surface can reveal a very different story once work begins.

That is why heritage restoration needs more than general building knowledge. It requires an understanding of how original materials behave, where modern methods can help and where they can do more harm than good.

It also needs craftspeople who can repair, adapt and recreate details by hand when the building demands it.

We see this across our work in historic properties in Rutland. Every building is different, but the approach remains the same.

Understand it first. Preserve what matters. Repair what can be saved. Make every new element feel as though it belongs.

A closer look at the guest bedroom at Ridlington 🔍

This room is full of small details that might be missed at first glance.

The deep window opening has become a generous seat overlooking the garden, while the small internal window uses textured panes to bring light through while maintaining privacy.

Exposed timbers remain visible throughout the room, and a narrow timber framed recess has been turned into useful shelving rather than being hidden away.

None of these details need to shout. Together, they give the room its warmth, character and sense of belonging within the house. 🪟

Inside this pool house, practical details were given a playful finishing touch. 🌊

We decorated the interior using a geometric pendant light, a characterful curved mirror, aqua hooks and sunshine yellow robes, all set against the warmth of the natural timber walls.

The result is a cheerful and functional changing space that perfectly captures the relaxed feeling of summer by the pool. ☀️
