Following the success of the Thatch Summer School we are running the Understanding Thatched Roofs Course on 9th July and the Thatching Weekend Course on the 11th to 13th July.

Earlier this week both Erica Bond and David Clare FRICS MFPWS went on a hashtag course designed for surveyors and run by Charles Chalcraft in Devon.

Thatching Summer School – both theory and hands on thatching.
Thatch Summer School.
Friday 6th June to Sunday 8th June. This is a combination of theory and practice. On Friday we run through the theory of Thatch with the Understanding Thatched Roofs Course. Friday evening we will start on the Weekend Practical Thatching Course. On Saturday you will be thatching on a special roof frame in the barn. You will be using Water Reed and Combed Wheat Reed. On Sunday we will be preparing a roof to ridge and ridging it out with a Butts Up Ridge, a Turn Over Ridge and a Block Turn Over Ridge. You will also see a house built of Nudura (polystyrene blocks clicked together and filled with concrete) and a 30Kw Bio Mass Log Boiler installation.
The first photo includes surveyors who are thatching water reed; then a wheat reed roof. The last 2 photos are of an amazing creation in Belgium. The talented group came on a Thatching Weekend, learned the basics and are now thatching unusual sculptures.
The combined courses will equip you with a better understanding about thatch. There is a big handbook of course handouts and 16 pages of how to survey thatch. Registered with IHBC.

Surveying Thatched Properties. I have been running the Understanding Thatched Roofs Courses since 2005. I cover Long Straw, Combed Wheat Reed and Water Reed thatching. It is a "one day" course. We have an Introduction to Thatch in the morning session that covers materials, examples, ridging techniques, the life of a thatched roof, fire and fire prevention, breathability & insulation (and more). The afternoon session covers common defects in all parts of a thatched roof and how to condition rate then for a Full Building Survey. Lots of photos and an 80 page handouts book. The course is held in our 1490, thatched village hall and we can inspect the smoke blackened thatch. Email:- [email protected] . Available dates 5th & 19th April and 12th June.
