If you knew your neighbours and had some shared space what would you do? What would make sense to do together? Create a large community compost? Build a pizza oven? Plant a community herb garden? Create an edible hedge? Look after chickens together? Dig a hole for a full-size trampoline? What if you had some secure storage space - what might you do then? Share a lawn mower? Organise a swop shop? Share a cargo bike? Create a library of things to share? What makes sense to share? When you co-design with future residents it is possible to have this conversation and design the development with that in mind.

At Miller's Field we intend to create homes that are at the same time both very cheap to run, meaning low energy bills, and environmentally friendly. Passivhaus is an approach to both designing and building houses, underpinned by building physics, which delivers highly energy efficient, healthy, thermally comfortable homes.

Passivhaus starts with first principles, and necessitates investment in a high quality, well insulated airtight building fabric, whilst designing homes to naturally take advantage of the sun’s ability to heat a home. Sophisticated energy modelling and a strict quality assurance process during construction means there is no gap between design expectations and in-use performance as there regularly is with non-Passivhaus homes. Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery ensures heat is retained within the home whilst ensuring excellent indoor air quality standards. All in all, Passivhaus homes are warm in winter, cool in summer, cost little to run, and create a quiet, healthy indoor environment - what is not to like?

Would you like to reduce your energy bills both now and for the future?

Sadly the current energy crisis has demonstrated just how exposed inefficient houses are to price rises. At Millers’ Field new homes will be designed and constructed to ensure they are extremely energy efficient protecting owners against future price spikes.

Passive design principles such as optimising orientation to the sun, and super insulating properties will reduce energy demand and Passivhaus certification will be pursued to ensure that Millers’ Field homes, unlike many modern homes, will perform just as they were designed to. We will use technology intelligently to reduce energy usage further still, with significant on-site renewable energy generation to minimise the need to buy expensive energy from the grid. This greater financial security also comes with the added satisfaction of doing the right thing for the planet.

The spaces around people’s individual homes on a development are as important as the homes themselves - they convey the qualities of a place and reflect what we prioritise. Often in new developments the spaces between homes are about the movement and parking of cars and the rest is turfed. For us, these spaces really matter and we invest a lot of time thinking about them. We like to create streets and shared spaces that do more - that work for people of all ages and provide places to play and places to socialise - that make space for nature and support biodiversity. Do you have examples of inspiring residential streets to share? We would love to see them.
