Oxford City Council Selective Licensing Scheme starts in LESS THAN 24 HOURS! Are you ready?

If you own a rented property within the area governed by Oxford City Council, that is not a HMO, then it is very likely to fall under the new Selective Licensing Scheme, STARTING TOMORROW!

Failing to licence your property could mean:

- The council can issue a financial penalty of up to £30,000 or on summary conviction at court receive an unlimited fine.

- Tenants can apply to the First-tier Tribunal for a rent repayment order to reclaim up to 12 months’ rent back. Rent can only be claimed from 01 September 2022 when the Selective Licence scheme starts. The tenants must demonstrate to the Tribunal they paid the rent.

- From 01 September 2022, section 21 notice cannot be served to end the tenancy while the house remains unlicensed

One of the questions we keep being asked about the new scheme is, "why?". Oxford City Councillor Linda Smith, Cabinet Member for Housing, sums it up nicely...

Introducing Oxford Property Licensing.

After over 10 years in the property industry, we decided to alter direction. Now, we share our passion by helping landlords stay compliant. Our process is designed to provide landlords and lettings agents with complete piece of mind to ensure their property licence application are submitted correctly in line with local authority regulations.

There are now THREE licensing schemes in Oxford. HMO, Additional, and Selective (effective 1st September). With this in mind, we have developed a unique, hassle-free service to help landlords/agents obtain the correct licence for their properties, by handling the licence applications on their behalf.

Failing to licence a property can lead to criminal prosecution and a hefty fine, a civil penalty of up to £30,000, an order to repay up to 12 months’ rent and the inability to evict tenants using a Section 21 Notice. It can all seem a bit daunting! Fortunately, Oxford Property Licensing are experts in the field, and we can take all the worries away.

With selective licensing starting on 1st September, and only a short period for landlords to benefit from reduced Oxford City Council licensing fees, it is paramount that landlords and agents act quickly. Our service will help them to benefit from those reduced fees, whilst we focus on their licence applications and they can continue to be busy benefiting from owning and managing property.
