The oak screen is now in place. 🪵

One of the biggest challenges with traditional English barns is natural light. In older buildings, the original slit openings were often designed for practicality and defence, whereas in this slightly newer barn, their intention was more focused on ventilation than bringing daylight into the space.

This new oak screen, alongside the Velux windows within the roof, will completely transform how light moves through the building while still respecting the character of the original structure.

Crafting an oak screen — it’s all in the detail. 🪵

Creating something like this isn’t just about cutting timber and assembling it — it’s a meticulous process from start to finish.

Every stage matters. From carefully selecting the right oak, to setting out precise measurements, forming traditional joints, and ensuring everything is perfectly aligned. The balance between structure, movement and finish is key, especially when working with a natural material like oak.

It’s this level of care and attention that allows us to produce something that not only looks right, but will stand the test of time.

Progress update from one of our Lake District projects 🏔️

Since completing the roof just before Christmas, work has been moving forward nicely inside this beautiful traditional building.

All of the external ground level walls have now been tanked, studded and insulated, preparing the structure for the next stage of the build. Working closely with our client, we carefully selected an insulation that reflects their commitments to protecting the planet.

The insulation we’re using is made from dried h**p stalks — grown in Britain, harvested, dried and then woven into dense rectangular bales. Not only is it a natural and renewable material, it also provides excellent thermal insulation. Because the bales are already sized to fit between studwork and roof spars, they’re also very practical and efficient to install.

You’ll also see one of the standout features of the project taking shape — this stunning Lakes cobble wall, recently completed and finished with reclaimed oak lintels. Details like this really make you feel the buildings heritage and remind you that you’re right in the heart of the Lake District.

It’s always a privilege to bring these historic structures back to life while respecting both the building and the landscape around it.

Here's just a quick look at some of the serious bargains we have! If you are keen to work with wood or need some sandstone features for your garden, then our sale is where to come!

We have an abundance of different varieties of timber. All air dried for at least 10, some even 15 years.

There are many different sandstone features. Lintels, flags, windows, arches, quoins and general stone piles.

There's also some firewood pallets going cheap!

Part 2 of our Grade II listed beam installation.

These reclaimed and remade oak trusses were recently lifted into place on this Grade II listed bastle building, carefully replicating the original roof structure that once stood here. Every joint, mortise and tenon has been reproduced exactly the way it was.— with sections of the original truss even reused to preserve the building’s authentic character.

Working with traditional materials and techniques allows us to protect the past while building for the future. Using solid oak and reclaimed timber not only respects the heritage of the building, but also reduces waste — a key part of our sustainable approach.

A proud moment on site and a big step forward in bringing this historic structure back to life.

As we head into the run up to Christmas, the team at Carrock Homes has been busy working on something truly special 🎄

Over the past few weeks, we have carefully removed a historic roof truss from a 16th/17th century bastle building. Bastle buildings are fortified farmhouses unique to the Anglo-Scottish border region, built with thick stone walls to protect families and livestock during times of unrest. This particular bastle is also listed, meaning every step of the process required the utmost care, skill, and respect for its heritage.

Once removed, the raised collar truss was transported back to our workshop, where it is being meticulously restored. Wherever possible, original timbers have been retained and conserved. Unfortunately, some elements were too badly damaged by time, weather and required careful remaking, using traditional techniques to match the original construction.

Seeing centuries-old craftsmanship brought back to life is a privilege, and projects like this are a reminder of why we do what we do. We’re looking forward to continuing this restoration and sharing the next stage of the journey in the New Year.
