Broad How

Broad How Spacious, comfortable and well-equipped, Broad How is a charming Lakeland house sleeping 14-16.

In the picturesque village of Patterdale, at the head of Ullswater, Broad How stands right on the coast to coast footpath, with 50 'Wainwrights' within 5 miles. The stunning house was built in the middle of the 19th Century, and has been owned for four generations by the same family, on land once owned by William Wordsworth. Few houses can provide such high-quality self-catering accommodation for

large groups, while retaining their feeling of family in the way that Broad How does. It has now been rented out happily for many years, so that visiting families and groups are able to share in its unique location, its luxurious facilities, and its magical atmosphere.

In January, we had the oil stolen from the central heating tank at Broad How. It is the second time, and we are aware that this is an increased risk given the soaring price. As you will know, we are constantly looking for ways to heat Broad How sustainably, and indeed the next stage of this, which involves replacing all of the remaining single-glazed windows with bespoke wooden double-glazed units in keeping with the style of the house, will be happening in September. This is a necessary stage in moving towards renewable heat sources, which is the clear longer term aim, although certainly challenging for a house of this age and size.

In the meantime, we are reluctantly installing cameras on site, to deter future thefts. The two cameras will be unobtrusive, and will be aimed only to record activity around the tank, and at the entrance gate to record vehicle details.

A bit of a breakthrough with a long-running Broad How irritation. For ages we have not been able to get a recycling collection at Broad How because no one who offers it has a small enough van to cross the Goldrill. But we have now done a deal with a local firm who will collect mixed recycling alongside general waste, and these weekly collections will start immediately. We are promised that less than 5% of this waste will end up in landfill.

Many thanks to those of you who have dutifully trucked along to Glenridding with your recycling over the years, but you will no longer need to do that! The new system simply means collecting general waste and mixed recycling [glass, paper, cardboard, plastic] in the bins provided, and if they are full, putting the bags in the big wooden chest by the gate. There are no longer the irritating special bags that have to be used, although everything does have to be in sealed bags or will not be collected.

Visitors will have noticed there is now also a specific dog waste bin in that area behind the copper beech tree.
